Magical Thinking
Magical Thinking: True Stories | Augusten Burroughs
From the number-one bestselling author of Running with Scissors and Dry comes Augusten Burroughs's most eagerly anticipated collection yet: true stories that give voice to the thoughts that we all have but dare not mention. It begins with a Tang Instant-Breakfast Drink television commercial: "Yes, you, Augusten. You were great. We want you." I can now trace my manic adult tendencies to this moment. It was the first time I felt deeply thrilled about something just a fraction of an instant after being completely crushed. I believe those three words "We want you" were enough to cause my brain to rewire itself, and from then on, I would require more than other people....- from Magical Thinking's "Commercial Break" A contest of wills with a deranged cleaning lady. The execution of a rodent carried out with military precision and utter horror. Telemarketing revenge. A different kind of "roof work." Dating an undertaker who shows up in a minivan. This is the fabric of Augusten Burroughs's life: a collection of true stories that are universal in their appeal yet unabashedly intimate, stories that shine a flashlight into both dark and hilarious places. With Magical Thinking, Augusten Burroughs goes where other memoirists fear to tread.

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️ These personal essays range in time from when Burroughs sold his first book, a satirical novel called Sellevision, to the success of Running with Scissors, and the diary-esque penning of Dry. It‘s been many, many years since I first read this collection, and I didn‘t like it as much as I remembered, but it‘s still decent. He‘s def not for everyone, but he‘s one of my favorites. I‘ll always credit him with my falling in love with memoir.

Scochrane26 I haven‘t read his recent work, but I think I read this one. I liked Dry the best. 4y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 Dry is my favorite, too. 💚 I liked his last 2 memoirs, too. The witch one is weird, but so is he. 😂 4y
Scochrane26 I have the witch one on my tbr. 4y

CaitlinR I loved both Running with ... and Dry. They helped while I was newly sober. I‘ll try this collection. Thanks! 4y
britt_brooke @CaitlinR 💚 That‘s a big reason I loved Dry so much. It came out the year my dad finally got sober. He has 16 years now. 4y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 It‘s good! I liked it more than I expected to given the synopsis. 4y
Scochrane26 @CaitlinR @britt_brooke I think I liked Dry because it‘s very helpful in understanding addiction & treatment. I read it toward the beginning of my social work career. I‘m not a certified drug counselor, but all therapists work some w/ substance abuse. I also really liked his brother‘s first book about having Asperger‘s. 4y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 I agree. I think it‘s a helpful perspective. I loved his brother‘s first book, but I haven‘t read his others. I think he has 2 more? I think I‘ll reread Look Me in the Eye soon. They‘re a fascinating family. 4y
Reviewsbylola I would love to just go have a drink with Augusten. He‘s so entertaining. I love his sense of humor. 4y
Reviewsbylola And if David sedaris could join us, that would be the icing on the cake! 4y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola That dinner party would be dream come true! 4y

Augusten is a riot and a half. So glad I finally found the book with my favorite quote: “I am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.” Though it was a bit slow getting acquainted to his style and manner of speaking, and his absolutely raunchy, morbid humor, a few essays in I was pretty much rapt. When I could focus wholly on how words I was laughing out loud, near tears. Love him.

MrBook Great review! 5y

Bailedbailed

After finishing the latest David Sedaris, I was in the mood for something similar. A Google search pointed me to this author.

Turns out his writing reads like he's a jerk, and I don't mean the endearing kind. I planned to just push through, but then I got to "The Rat Thing." It made me so angry I instantly bailed and returned the book to the library. It's just cruel and awful, and he's glib about it. I'll never pick up another of his books.

I‘m glad it‘s a #magicalmonday! For a time I feared it was a #doomladenmonday per usual 😂
1. Scooby Doo. Not even close ❤️
2. DRAGONS 🐉 Despite the fact that I am crunchy & good with catsup.
3. Adore the magic in the HP ‘verse. It‘s the right blend of grave & whimsy.
4. LOTR, always.
5. Sipping coffee - the most magical fluid known except blood, which I do NOT drink - and reading books. ❤️☕️📚

Seekingtardis I heard they were getting into sriracha now 😂😂😂 7y
