Indian Killer
Indian Killer: A Novel | Sherman Alexie
11 posts | 22 read | 13 to read
A gritty, smart thriller from a literary superstar A killer has Seattle on edge. The serial murderer has been dubbed “the Indian Killer” because he scalps his victims and adorns their bodies with owl feathers. As the city consumes itself in a nightmare frenzy of racial tension, a possible suspect emerges: John Smith. An Indian raised by whites, John is lost between cultures. He fights for a sense of belonging that may never be his—but has his alienation made him angry enough to kill? Alexie traces John Smith’s rage with scathing wit and masterly suspense. In the electrifying Indian Killer, a national bestseller and New York Times Notable Book, Sherman Alexie delivers both a scintillating thriller and a searing parable of race, identity, and violence. This ebook features an illustrated biography including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Bailedbailed

My pledge this year is to not waste time on books I don‘t enjoy. Both of these have been on my tbr shelf forever…and #bookspin and #doublespin has cleared them. I bailed on them both.
@TheAromaofBooks

BarbaraBB That‘s a relief 😉 3y
TheAromaofBooks So good to get those kinds of books of the shelf - ones I feel guilty about not at least giving a chance, even when I am pretty sure I'm not going to like them! I had someone do a bingo list last year comprised entirely of titles she thought she was going to bail on and she cleared all 25 off her shelves that month!!! 3y

Pickpick

This is a disturbing, at times funny, novel about a mentally ill Native American man who was raised by a white couple and knows nothing about his blood relatives, not even which tribe. He decides to start murdering random white men. The characters are believable and well drawn. Humor comes from the cringe worthy scenes with white characters who claim to be Indian and the racist, ridiculous things well meaning white people say to Indians.

LitStephanie There are awful racially motivated attacks when word gets out that there is an "Indian killer" murdering whites. Lots of violence in this book. But there are also some racist caricatures who are silly and provide a little comic relief, like the idiot guy who tries to ask an Indian girl out by telling her he wants to get an Indian perspective on things. Really shines light on the problem of assuming all Indians have the same opinions! 4y
sprainedbrain I need to read this. I‘ve only read one Alexie and need to go back for more. Great review! 4y
LitStephanie @sprainedbrain thanks. This is the first full length novel of his I have read. If you ever get a chance to go to his readings, just do it. He is hilarious. 4y
sprainedbrain I will keep that in mind! I read this one and laughed so hard at several points... 4y

This was an intense read! There‘s a serial killer in Seattle, targeting white men. There are several characters that are viable suspects. With each murder, racial tensions increase, often resulting in violence. #AmericanMulticulturalLitClass

This was a required read for my Native American literature class but it was so good I would have enjoyed reading it without having to! I‘d definitely recommend it, but I encourage you to buy it second hand or borrow it if you‘d like to read it so that Alexie does not profit from it, recent sexual assault allegations against him have surfaced and I would not feel comfortable supporting him in light of this.

To my shame I've only read Part-Time Indian. All of these are in my classroom library, where I try to stock diverse authors. #riotgrams #day9 #nativeandindigenousauthors #teachersoflitsy
