Billy Budd & Other Stories
Billy Budd & Other Stories | Herman Melville
4 posts
Melville's short stories are masterpieces. The best are to be appreciated on more than one level and those presented here are rich with symbolism and spiritual depth. Set in 1797, Billy Budd, Foretopman exploits the tension of this period during the war between England and France to create a tale of satanic treachery, tragedy and great pathos that explores human relationships and the inherently ambiguous nature of man-made justice. Tales such as Bartleby, Benito Cereno, The Lightning Rod Man, The Tartarus of Maids or I and My Chimney, show the timeless poetic power of Melville's writing as he consciously uses the disguise of allegory in various ways and to various ends.

I was thinking about my Melville reading days back in college while seeing the Moby Dick posts from @Kalalalatja - and then I found this pristine 1961 copy of his stories yesterday. I remember not hating his short stories as much as that damn whaling manual.
Plus the cover looks like the Matchbox 20 singer when he went through an eyeliner phase 🤣
This cost $1.25 in '61. 56 years later, I bought it for $1.50...and I swear it was never opened!

LeahBergen And that big hoop earring! 😂 8y

Kalalalatja I have heard some good things about his short stories, so I might check them out, once I have gotten over The Whale. That cover is everything though 😂 8y

Melville wrote amazing short stories and this collection is a good place to start if you haven't read any of them yet. Bartleby the Scrivener is a favorite of mine
