The Illegal Gardener
The Illegal Gardener: The Greek Village Series | Sara Alexi
6 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Driven by a need for some control in her life, Juliet sells up on impulse and buys a dilapidated farm house in a tiny Greek village, leaving her English life behind. The house is liveable by local standards but the job of restoring the garden is too big. Juliet cannot bring it to life on her own. Aaman has traveled to Greece from Pakistan illegally. His task is to find work and raise money for the harvester his village desperately needs to deliver them out of poverty. What he imagined would be a heroic journey in reality is fraught with danger and corruption. He finds himself in Greece where Juliet hires him. As the summer progresses, they discover they have something in common, an event that has defined how they interact and how they view themselves.

Read this for #foodandlit and it definitely fit the prompt - Greece was very much an extra character within the story. However, the story itself was lacking. I would have liked it much more if the author had gone into their relationship a little more - it felt very passing and shallow. Also there was definite xenophobia, particularly against Albanians? Idk but it was a no from me.

Texreader I‘ve picked up on that feeling about Albanians in other books about Greece. Must be a local thing. I‘m hoping it‘s a friendly rivalry, like Norway (husband is Norwegian) and Sweden. Or our biggest college football teams in Texas. They love to bash the other. 3y

It is only in the world of readers that being a quitter is seen as a strength.

With this one my strength nearly failed me ... I was a good 70% of the way through before I was overcome with anger.

Hours of my life I'll never get back.

It's really very bad indeed.

Ubiquitous cliche alert!

Are all sofas, armchairs etc overfilled? Are none a bit saggy, kinda flat, slumped, bum-numbing or even ... gasp! UNDERFILLED?!!

Stop it now.

Or at least I absolutely can't stay awake anymore (technically 20 minutes to go). I will post my stats in the morning. I completely strayed from my planned tbr and read a kindle book - The Illegal gardener - instead.
