That was probably not a good idea for a lunch time read (the second lunchtime read in 16 weeks!).
Left me very sad. RIP Matthew Shepard.

rockpools That sounds very sad. But yay for getting a lunch break 😘 4y
Nute I recall watching the 20/20 or 60 Minutes investigative exposé on this brutal incident. I was left feeling a devastating sense of sadness, shock and loss.? 4y
TrishB @RachelO that was one plus! 4y

TrishB @Nute I have a gay son too, so my heart just feels a bit bruised after reading. That poor, young man 💔 4y
MicheleinPhilly I still can‘t bring myself to read about him. His mother‘s memoir broke me. 4y
Nute The world is troubled. It feels like it will take a miracle for all folks to exhibit a willingly inclusiveness for everyone and everybody. Respect, kindness, generosity, tolerance, compassion - those should be natural human tendencies...required states of being! 4y
Oldschool_millenial This play is how I even know of Matthew Shepard 4y

This was a powerful creative retelling in free form verse, of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard. Audio was haunting. Told through the “voices” of witnesses, friends, students, the victim, the perpetrators, the inanimate objects that were part of the crime. Author published this on the 10 year anniversary of Matthew‘s death, which took place in 1998. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 3 of #adventrecommends : 24 books you think people should know about.

In 1998, Matthew Shepard, 21, was lured from a Wyoming bar by two men, savagely beaten, tied to a remote fence, and left to die — because he was gay. This is a series of 68 poems about his death, written from various points of views, including the fence he was tied to, the stars that watched over him as he was dying, the deer that kept him company, and Matthew himself.

TrishB That sounds so sad 💔 ☹️ 5y
Amiable @TrishB It‘s powerful and moving and — given that we have an administration in this country that is intent on rolling back protections for the LGBTQ community — vitally necessary. 😢 5y
TrishB Agree totally. I just don‘t know if I could read. I have stacked and see when emotionally ready. 5y

Did you know that the author of Heather Has Two Mommies also wrote a book of poems about Matthew Shepard's death and that she has direct connections to that place and time? I enjoyed hearing her speak tonight.

ReadingEnvy @Notafraidofwords I've seen the film. She mentioned it in her presentation, along with the Angel Wings project, which was started by Matthew's friends. I had heard of the project but didn't know how it was connected! 7y

October Mourning is a beautiful and devastating volume of poetry. It might be one of the only poetry volumes that has ever brought me to tears. It expresses every bit of emotion involved with the tragic loss of Matthew Shepard, and serves up a stunningly told narrative of his murder.

Cinfhen Sounds really good! #stacking 7y
