He says the profit margin on fake extra virgin olive oil is greater than that on cocaine. Therefore, it isn‘t surprising that possibly 2/3 of the EVOO in American supermarkets is fake. (Author Robin Sloan is also on this show.) Gastropod podcast is consistently informative and entertaining.
