They‘re mostly anonymous women, men & children from the western world, captured working on their knitting, but some are familiar. This photo made me giggle when I thought to myself, “He‘s knitting himself some clothing.” Then I read the sobering context: he‘s either a German or Italian merchant seaman in a detainment camp in North Dakota during WWII.

I have a special fascination for the intersection of knitting and photography. For while knitting has been around for centuries, it is only in the last 150 years that we have been able to actually photograph someone--a mother, daughter, sister, brother, father, son, or friend--in the meditative act of knitting.
