In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer | Irene Gut Opdyke
IRENE GUT WAS just 17 in 1939, when the Germans and Russians devoured her native Poland. Just a girl, really. But a girl who saw evil and chose to defy it. “No matter how many Holocaust stories one has read, this one is a must, for its impact is so powerful.”—School Library Journal, Starred A Book Sense Top Ten Pick A Publisher’s Weekly Choice of the Year’s Best Books A Booklist Editors Choice

Irene Gut was 16 when the Nazis invaded Germany. Despite her youth and the #danger she became a part of the resistance smuggling food, supplies, and information and helping hide Jews in the home of a Nazi officer where she worked. I read this memoir years ago and remember being enthralled. #reallyrandomfebruary

For #YAWednesday, I am choosing In My Hands. Its a memoir about a woman who was a Polish resistance member during WW2. The quote is the opening line of the book. I will never forget it as long as I live. This is a heavy, gut wrenching memoir with lots of violence. However, it‘s one everyone should read so that the victims of the atrocities committed in WW2 are never forgotten. @TheFunkyBookworm

Daisey I have this on audio, and I think after your post I need to move it up on the list! 6y
TheFunkyBookworm Oh wow- this quote has me wanting more! Stacking! Thank you 💜🎉 6y
BridgetteM @TheFunkyBookworm and @Daisey I can‘t recommend it highly enough. 6y

So far this WWII memoir is heartbreaking and horrifying. The things that humans can do to each other never ceases to shock me.

Daisey I have this on audio but have not gotten a chance to listen yet. 7y
AvidReader25 @Daisey I'm listening to the audio as well. It's not an easy book. 7y

When the war began, Irene Gut was just 17: a student nurse, a Polish patriot, a good Catholic girl. Forced to work in a German officers' dining hall, she learned how to fight back.

This looks like an interesting and up-close perspective. TBR?

rjsthumbelina I read this in Jr high and remember loving it! Strong MC 7y

The Hiding Place, in which a family was sent to concentration camps for helping Jews, was the first book about WWII that I ever read. My grandma gave it to me when I was 11. It fueled a life-long love of books about that war. In My Hands is the story of the lengths one woman went to in order to save as many Jews as she could. #war #maybookflowers

This woman was amazing. She hid Jews in the basement of a German general's home! 😱 She is definitely one of my #historicalheroines
