What You Should Know About Politics . . . But Don't
What You Should Know About Politics . . . But Don't: A Nonpartisan Guide to the Issues That Matter | Jessamyn Conrad
5 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
“Engaging and inspiring . . . Reading this book should make you want to vote.” —Barack Obama In a world of sound bites, deliberate misinformation, and a political scene that is colored by the blue versus red partisan divide. How does the average educated American find a reliable source that’s free of political spin? What You Should Know About Politics . . . But Don’t breaks it all down, issue by issue, explaining who stands for what, and why—whether it’s the economy, income inequality, Obamacare, foreign policy, education, immigration, or climate change. If you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or somewhere in between, it’s the perfect book to brush up on a single topic or read through to get a deeper understanding of the often mucky world of American politics. This is an essential volume for understanding the background to the 2016 presidential election. But it is also a book that transcends the season. It’s truly for anyone who wants to know more about the issues, which are perennial issues that will continue to affect our everyday lives.

Step 2 in my newfound righteous journey: To refresh my general knowledge of American government. Conrad‘s book is nonpartisan as advertised. It goes not only through inner government workings but the topics that were big at the time it was published in 2008 (surprise! they haven‘t changed much). Still, a bit outdated.

The Great Courses are fantastic and in depth. Prof. Victor‘s course is nonpartisan and mentions Trump, so is very recent.

Suet624 I‘m appreciative that you‘re reading this material. It should be a required subject in high school. 3w

Tagged is a good overview of US politics, and Timothy Snyder's The Road to Unfreedom is a good (scary) look at Russian politics and how they influence politics in the US and Europe. On my TBR is Ghosts of Spain by Giles Tremlett, so hopefully I'll learn a bit more about Spain's history and politics soon, too.

Excellent nonpartisan overview of many hot issues in American politics, but I'm not sure what the point of the 2020 edition was. Comparing the 1st, 3rd, and 4th editions, there's really not much new in this newest one. Nothing past 2012, NAFTA is still written about in the present tense, 2000 and 2004 are listed as contentious elections but nothing about 2016, and no mention of executive overreach post-G. W. Bush. Needs updating.

Audiopruning! After 2.5 years in this house and bolstered by my success cutting my son's hair yesterday, I finally worked up the courage to prune our seriously overgrown hibiscus shrubs. Luckily I was able to leave several buds. Now to hope the winter rains help them fill out a bit.

While working, I listened to the military, health care, and energy sections of the tagged book.

Megabooks I keep meaning to write you about contact tracing. Thank you for the card while I was sick! 💖 4y
ImperfectCJ @Megabooks You're welcome! It was such a shock to see your post about your positive test result, and I was so glad to hear that you weathered the illness well. How are your parents doing? 4y
Megabooks @ImperfectCJ they‘re fine, thank goodness! Dad is starting back at PT and OT tomorrow. 4y
