The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts
The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts | Louis de Bernieres
3 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
This rambunctious first novel by the author of the bestselling Corelli's Mandolin is set in an impoverished, violent, yet ravishingly beautiful country somewhere in South America. When the haughty Dona Constanza decides to divert a river to fill her swimming pool, the consequences are at once tragic, heroic, and outrageously funny. "Walks a precarious edge between slapstick and pathos, never once losing its balance."--Washington Post Book World.

Time for tea, chocolate biscuits, and a new book. I‘ve had THE WAR OF DON EMMANUEL‘S NETHER PARTS on La TBR ever since someone on LibraryThing told me I HAD to read it ASAP. That was over a decade ago.

The first chapter was promising, but the second indicated I‘m either in for a possibly dodgy satire or a racist mess. Maybe a dodgy, racist, satirical mess? I‘ll read more and report back.

We're going to have our hall redecorated so that means sorting out the bookshelves... this is what I've saved!
