#20series20days. The Dalziel and Pascoe series

I love these police procedural mysteries with a side of politics. Reginald Hill used these books to discuss issues that interested him. I think some of the books would feel a little dated now, we've moved on from some of these things, but I'm still sorry he died before he finished what had to say about government responses to the resurgence of terrorism. There are 25 books in all - these are a taste.

CarolynM @TrishB They got a lot more and interesting as they went along. My favourite is tagged set against the background of the miners strikes and associated protests in the 80's

This was an enjoyable first book in the Dalziel and Pascoe Series, that I only know previously from the tv series from a few years ago. Dalziel is certainly an irascible Detective who speaks as he finds things, paired with a graduate. Interesting conflict of outlooks! But it seems to work. The plot was very interesting in this one and quite a unique murder in the end. You can feel it was written in 1970 but it works! Look forward to continuing.

Andrew65 @EadieB ðŸ˜Š Can see how they chose the lead actor from this book. My library has about 12 of these as audiobooks so going to start working through the series. Also gives me some 1970s years for the century challenge. 5y

CarolynM I absolutely love this series. It gets better and better. I love the way Hill used the detective format to explore social issues. I'm still upset about his death because I think he had a lot more to say. Dalziel is a great character, but Peter is really the heart of the series and I completely adore Ellie. I watched a few of the TV adaptations but while they nailed Dalziel they got Peter and Ellie and their relationship so wrong. 5y

Published in 1970 this was the first of Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe crime series. It's decently written, and I suspect it's one of those series that gets better as it goes on. One of my main pleasures in reading popular fiction from what is now almost a bygone era is noticing how much social attitudes have changed since my childhood. Here it's the casual sexism which is likely to make a modern reader gasp a bit. But enjoyable.

This was Reginald Hillâ€˜s first Dalziel and Pascoe novel. It lacks the humour that became so central to the later books. If I had read this when it came out, I probably wouldnâ€˜t have bother to read any of his other books, which would have been a shame.
