Set in New York City's Gilded Age, Joanna Shupe's Avon debut introduces an English beauty with a wicked scheme to win the man she loves--and the American scoundrel who ruins her best laid plans...Lady Honora Parker must get engaged as soon as possible, and only a particular type of man will do. Nora seeks a mate so abhorrent, so completely unacceptable, that her father will reject the match--leaving her free to marry the artist she loves. Who then is the most appalling man in Manhattan? The wealthy, devilishly handsome financier, Julius Hatcher, of course....Julius is intrigued by Nora's ruse and decides to play along. But to Nora's horror, Julius transforms himself into the perfect fiance, charming the very people she hoped he would offend. It seems Julius has a secret plan all his own--one that will solve a dark mystery from his past, and perhaps turn him into the kind of man Nora could truly love.

A pleasant enough read, if nothing terribly special. I agree with an earlier reviewer that the spurned lover turning violent madman seemed convenient rather than plausible.

Not a bad book, but I found it a slow start and when it picked up it only got to good, not great. Doubtful I‘ll read more by this author.

It‘s not a good sign when the second paragraph, on the first page, contains a grammatical error. Admittedly, I‘m a bit of a grammar snob, but this is making me wary.

BehindthePages Kim Harrison had a huge amount of typos in her first book and she's a bestseller. Sometimes it make you wonder..... 5y
ravenlee @Letora I read the first book in Kim Harrison‘s witch series and found it awful, frankly. I don‘t remember typos specifically but just didn‘t like the super depressing world. I do remember reading a Lynsey Sands book, I think they reissued her debut or something, and the grammar and typos were just atrocious. It does definitely make me wonder. 5y

I liked it. This is a “get an outrageous fiancé to annoy daddy enough to let you wed the unsuitable artist fiancé” plot and we all know where that leads. Hatcher is an interesting character. I wasn‘t quite sure if the story earned the “original fiancé turns out to be a nut” plot point. It seemed very convenient.

I gave this one 3.5 stars. It was an entertaining, funny read with a spirited English lady and wild American rake as the main couple. I loved the romance aspect but I was not sure about the "suspense" of the story. However the way the hero and heroine don't hold back when it comes to their feelings gave ME all the good feelings ??

I was lucky enough to read this book early with an ARC...and didn't hesitate to draw me in.....Honora needs a scoundrel so outlandish that her father will bring her home from The America back to London and her true love....but what if a long the way Julius redeems himself and Honora finds herself falling in love with him..get the book find out...it's 1st in a new series

NYC 1890 - A fake engagement between the daughter of an earl & a wealthy financier. I loved the setting, characters and the story. However, the author is very fond of sentence fragments and starting sentences with "Which". The writing style really took me out of the story several times. I would have bailed if I had not liked everything else about it. #romantsy #osrbc

I'm starting an ARC of Joanna Shupe's next book right now while I eat a very simple lunch of crackers and cheese. #romantsy
