pickEnjoyed this graphic memoir of Gabrielle returning home to help her mother rebuild after a house fire. They have a fractured relationship strife with past abuses and neglect, but it was an honest real portrayal of a mother daughter relationship. Plus I appreciated Gabrielle‘s speaking candidly about her mental illnesses.

so-soThis is a very quiet graphic memoir. Gabrielle Bell reflects on her depression and her relationship with her mother, which all revolves around her mother's home burning down in California. Slow paced but very thoughtful.
pickThis graphic memoir recounts what happened when the author flew back to rural Norther California to help her reclusive mother who lost everything in a fire. It has an interesting cast of country characters. The story doesn't explore any one issue too deeply, but has a series of vignettes that kept me reading.

It sucks when this happens. I requested an ARC because this book sounded AMAZING, & while there were some good parts, they would suddenly end about the time I was getting into the story. There was so much potential here & so many interesting threads to follow & yet the story just fell apart. I'm supposed to do a review/author interview for a lit mag, so I'm going to have to see if I feel differently on a re-read. I hate writing negative reviews...
