So I'm reading this one and I have the red (not final) cover with the face on it. My kids saw it and asked why I was reading a bad YA novel. Obviously changing the cover to the lovely muted option was a good idea!

This book was ok. Character and world development could have been stronger. I was never overly invested in any of the characters. I would really only recommend this to people who really love historical fiction, and are interested in a story about Japanese-American Internment camps.

It offers very intimate and thought-provoking insight into the psyche of post-WWII internment survivors as well as the effects on their children & the raising of their children. It's intellectual & emotional. But it's dishearteningly boring & lethargic, which makes it very challenging to stay interested or connect with any of the characters. 2/5.
