The Virgin in the Garden
The Virgin in the Garden: A Novel | A.S. Byatt
14 posts | 19 read | 10 to read
The Virgin in the Garden is a wonderfully erudite entertainment in which enlightenment and sexuality, Elizabethan drama and contemporary comedy, intersect richly and unpredictably.

I think my problem is that every time I pick up a book by Byatt I want it to be another Possession and of course it never is. #24in2024

Foragingfantasy I have started Possession a couple of times and haven‘t gotten far. I‘m going to try again. 4mo
Jas16 @Foragingfantasy it isn‘t for everyone but I always say it is the book I wish I could read again for the first time. Then again, with the way I forget details about books, I probably could. 4mo

I read this book exactly at the right time and loved it. It is about one of those periods of life when one is on the cusp of change, for better or worse. One of those times that end up looming large in one's memory. I had a summer similar to Frederica's when I was 18. This summer I was getting to know my baby daughter.

That said, as it is a Byatt, it is not an easy book and is full of literary, historical, geographical and cultural references.

I ordered this copy used and when it arrived I was dismayed to find that it is tinged brown- the cover, the pages, everything. It is still readable but I need to get over being sad every time I pull it off my shelves. #gardentitle #aprilbookshowers

This one unfortunately is not doing it for me at all. 140 pages in and for my own sanity I've had to pull the trigger! It's not a good sign when you'd prefer to do anything else than read😑

This is my first time to try anything by A.S. Byatt, but anything kicking off at the start of the Elizabethan age is right up my alley😊

Lacythebookworm Enjoy! Another great book by her is 8y
Ais @Lacythebookworm thanks a million! I'll be sure to check that out as well! 8y
Nat_Reads I just finished this and adored it. My most favorite of hers is Possession--which is currently my favorite book. 8y
