Strange Fits of Passion
Strange Fits of Passion: A Novel | Anita Shreve
7 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
The reader is left to uncover the truth in this labryinth of a tale, a riveting story told within the framework of one reporter's notes and a woman's letters from prison. Everyone believes that Maureen and Harrold English, two successful New York City journalists, have a happy, stable marriage. It's the early '70s and no one discusses or even suspects domestic abuse. But after Maureen suffers another brutal beating, she flees New York with her infant daughter and seeks refuge in a small coastal town in Maine. The weeks pass slowly, and just as Maureen begins to heal physically and emotionally, Harrold finds her, bringing the story to a violent, unforgettable end.

Last one of the 6 books I had of hers. Again not my favourite. I think the Pilots Wife that I read years ago was the best for me. I learnt that she had died in 2018. But she has left a legacy of writing that is full of great descriptions and a fluency that is a delight. I probably won‘t read anymore of hers but glad I‘ve had a go at 7.
Love that she writes so well about New England.

Sometimes I am not quite willing to let go of a book...even though I've set it aside. I've written a blog post about it: https://theludicreader.com/2020/06/04/i-just-cant-seem-to-quit-you/

Louise Just read your blog post. There‘s something about these current times that is so disruptive to our regular reading habits. I think you are right to hang on to those books you‘ve set aside. They may well interest you when the world finds its “new normal”. Thanks for sharing! 5y

Loved it! Maureen and Harrold are married journalists who seem like the perfect couple, but Harrold is abusive. After a terrible beating, Maureen takes their baby daughter and runs, landing in a small New England town. It was a great story, told from the perspective of several characters. I found parts difficult to read, but it‘s not a graphic book just very uncomfortable at times. Beautifully written, I would absolutely recommend.

Probably 15 years ago I worked with a girl who said she had read the best book ever. I convinced her to lend it to me (proceeded to keep it, I‘m so sorry) and agreed. It was The Last Time They Met by Anita Shreve and it blew my mind. I haven‘t read a lot of her other books because they might not stand up to the pedestal that one is on, but this one is amazing. I‘ve been in a book finishing slump but I‘m coming out!

Reagan @Kaye thanks for the recommendation! I tried Fortune‘s Rocks and just could not get into it but maybe I‘ll have to give that one a shot. Plus true crime connection 👍🏻 6y

There was nothing in particular wrong with this book. The story kept me reading but it wasn't enthralling.
