The Thin Place
The Thin Place | Kathryn Davis
6 posts | 11 read | 118 to read
In a thin place, according to legend, the membrane separating this world from the spirit world is almost nonexistent. The small New England town of Varennes is such a place, and Kathryn Davis transports us there - revealing a surprising pageant of life as, in the course of one summer, Varennes' tranquillity is shattered by the arrival of a threatening outsider, worldly and otherworldly forces come into play, and a young local girl finds her miraculous gift for resurrecting the dead tested by the conflict between logic and wish.

Bailedbailed

I may come back to this one day as the writing is interesting, but 90 pages into a 275 page book nothing has happened. I'm bored and restless with the ever shifting POV, which sometimes shifts mid page. And we have land and animal POVs, not just human. Not in the mood to sort through this.

BeckyLeJ I struggled with this one as well. Haven't gone back to it but still haven't been able to part with it either. 8y
Lindy I found this book charming, but animal POV is a hook for me. 8y
Bookgirl @LiteraryinLititz good idea, I'm moving to The Fireman! 8y
Bookgirl @BeckyLeJ I think I want to come back to this but I'm just too busy right now to have the patience! @Lindy I'm not minding the various and non human views, just having trouble staying with it with all the shifting! I'll pick it up again eventually, the writing is beautiful in spots. 8y

Pickpick

Original and entertaining. A different twist in getting inside the head of otters, dogs and town folk. A first read for me by Davis and want to def read more by her. It helped me get over a huge reading slump as of late. Wish me luck! This site is an inspiration. :-)

BookishFeminist Ooo this looks intriguing! 8y
dairine Good book. It didn't "stick" too well, but I remember this odd feeling of ennui afterward. 8y

I'm pretty sure that Kathryn Davis is a powerful wizard. In The Thin Place she somehow manages to get in the heads of dogs and otters, lichen and glaciers, and churchgoers and thieves. It's one of the most fun, most original books I've ever come across. --Miguel

ViridianGirl I loved reading that book - surreal! 9y
case_face I highly recommend her recent novel, 9y
EpicReads Hai friends!!! 9y
