Birds of Prey | Wilbur Smith
Mehso-so

Book #9 in the Courtney family series. This book goes back to the beginning of the Courtney‘s of Africa. All the way to the 1660‘s where Hal has to grow up fast. A lot more of sailing in the seas, religious wars, piracy and not a lot of the African interior. If this was the first book I read in the series I‘d be too bored to continue. But since I know how things are in 200 years I‘m keen to read how the Courtney‘s got there.

A simple mission. A battle for their lives.

It is 1667, and the war between the Dutch and the English continues apace. Sir Francis Courtney, his son Hal and their crew are carried around the southern tip of the African colonies by the good ship Lady Edwina, licensed to attack and seize the treasure-laden ships of the Dutch East India company...

Totally brought to tears on page 551 and 552. This has to be one of the best books ever in life. Anybody‘s.

Geenie Sam Bowles, captured prisoner on what was to be his own ship, struck out to stab Hal, new captain of said ship, with a poison tipped dagger and Sukeena, love of his Hal‘s life, took the stab. She gave birth to his dead son as she died. 😭🤬 (edited) 5y

Just about to start this epic 774 page book for my work book club! Each term someone picks a book and we get together in the pub after work in the week before we break up and have a pint and talk about it.

Ottergirl So I‘ve read this for a book Club. It‘s a LONG book, and it‘s written for a ‘male gaze‘ (which means it‘s pretty grim in places!) but it‘s still an enjoyable story. It was a swashbuckling adventure, plenty of treachery and treasure hunting! It does go on a bit though 🙄 5y
