The Red House
The Red House | Mark Haddon
10 posts | 24 read | 18 to read
A dazzlingly inventive novel about modern family, from the author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The set up of Mark Haddon's brilliant new novel is simple: Richard, a wealthy doctor, invites his estranged sister Angela and her family to join his for a week at a vacation home in the English countryside. Richard has just re-married and inherited a willful stepdaughter in the process; Angela has a feckless husband and three children who sometimes seem alien to her. All eight arrive with low expectations for a pleasant holiday. But because of Haddon's extraordinary narrative technique, the stories of these eight people are anything but simple. Told through the alternating viewpoints of each character, The Red House becomes a symphony of long-held grudges, fading dreams and rising hopes, tightly-guarded secrets and illicit desires, all adding up to a portrait of contemporary family life that is bittersweet, comic, and deeply felt. The Red House is a literary tour-de-force that illuminates the puzzle of family in a profoundly empathetic manner--a novel sure to entrance the millions of readers of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Perhaps not a book about a typical #vacation but Mark Haddon definitely doesn't write typical stories.

In looking through my books with red in the title, I realized most of them had a sinister edge. Not exactly a holiday vibe, depending on how you celebrate, I suppose 😆 #redbooks #decktheshelves

Betty Good perspective: "sinister edge." 7y

When your clothes match your current read 😄 What time is it where you live? It's 6:30 Sunday evening here. The brats have gotten their baths and they've now located them selves on opposite sides of the house, Little Big Planet booming from one side, My Little Pony from the other. #sundaybliss

I was rather crafty today! I was going to taste the Firestarter tea from the previous The Nocturnal Reader's box, and our infusers were nowhere to be found! *potentional crisis* BUT I cut a piece of a new, not worn, nylon stockings and made a tea bag 😂 I ❤ my moose cup!

ArcticDwarf @TobeyTheScavengerMonk sounds like a crazy read! Awesome! How do you link books like that in a comment?? 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk When you're making a comment, below where you type there's a button to tag a book. Also a skull and crossbones to hide your comment if it has spoilers in it. And it is a wonderfully crazy read! 8y

Bailedbailed

I had to bail. Not because it isn't well written or because I didn't like the plot. It is and I do. The issue is that I was listening to it on audio and, for some reason, my mind kept wandering. I plan to pick it up in print. All faith in Mr Haddon. :)
