Where Roses Never Die
Where Roses Never Die | Gunnar Staalesen
5 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
September 1977. Mette Misvær, a three-year-old girl disappears without trace from the sandpit outside her home. Her tiny, close middle-class community in the tranquil suburb of Nordas is devastated, but their enquiries and the police produce nothing. Curtains twitch, suspicions are raised, but Mette is never found. Almost 25 years later, as the expiry date for the statute of limitations draws near, Mette’s mother approaches PI Varg Veum, in a last, desperate attempt to find out what happened to her daughter. As Veum starts to dig, he uncovers an intricate web of secrets, lies and shocking events that have been methodically concealed. When another brutal incident takes place, a pattern begins to emerge ... Chilling, shocking and full of extraordinary twists and turns, Where Roses Never Die reaffirms Gunnar Staalesen as one of the world’s foremost thriller writers.

The British publisher of these translated Norwegian novels has it figured out too (see my last two posts for an ongoing theme as I work on my shelf tonight).

@AnneCecilie Have you read Staalesen‘s books?

AnneCecilie No, I‘ve never read any of his books. Looking forward to your thoughts on him 5y
Texreader @AnneCecilie I‘ve read one. It was good, not great. He‘s one of my husband‘s favorite authors though, and he has all Staalesen‘s books, in Norwegian, of course. And I have a great photo where he‘s standing beside the investigator Varg Veum‘s statue in Bergen. I love that Bergen erected a statue to a fictional character. So cool!! Anyway maybe I‘ll start to love him, too, if I read enough. Hard to find translations. I got these in London 5y

Book haul from Foyles for Books here in London. Can't get these translated Staalesen books in San Antonio so I grabbed every one they had. Husband said Roses is the best one of his books. Also thought I'd try Poldark!

Zelma I just added Poldark to my TBR. I've been eyeing it for awhile and think it will be a perfect epic to fall into soon. 7y
Texreader @Zelma I'm still wrapping up books from vacation but I agree about Poldark. Looks like we could fall into those books for a nice long time!! 7y

This is the last paragraph of the book and a perfect way to end this mystery novel. It doesn't give anything away about the resolution of the mystery and leaves me with hope - not only for more in the series but in life as well.

Pickpick

I've discovered SO MANY fantastic new authors through Audible's Deal of the Day emails. This one was a great read (everything you expect from good Scandinavian crime writing, plus some great characters, an unusual setting and generally fabulous writing) & I am going out immediately to find more Gunnar Staalesen novels to read :)

Ms.Story Sounds amazing! 8y
Laura317 I didn't know they had Daily Deals. I just signed up for the emails. Thanks! 8y
