6 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
Vanessa Michael Munroe—the fearless heroine of the New York Times bestseller The Informationist—returns in a gripping new thriller. Eight years ago, five-year old Hannah was spirited out of school and into the closed world of a cult known as The Chosen. Ever since, followers of its leader have hidden the child and shielded her abductor. Now, childhood survivors of The Chosen who have escaped to make a life for themselves on the outside know here to find Hannah and turn to Vanessa Michael Munroe for help. Munroe reluctantly takes the job, and travels to Buenos Aires to infiltrate the cult and save the girl. Inducted in to a world unlike anything she has faced before, Munroe must navigate unpredictable members and their dangerous cohorts, the impatient survivors who hired her, and the struggle against her own increasingly violent nature so she can rescue the child before the window of opportunity closes and Hannah is lost forever. Now with an excerpt from the latest Vanessa Michael Munroe novel, The Catch

The author was brought up in a cult environment, and much of the story felt plausible for this reason. This became a page-turner halfway through and landed in a realistic, slightly open-ended way, which makes sense given the circumstances. If you're down for bad-ass, female vigilante protagonists, this one's for you. Oh, and definitely a #revenge sub-theme in here for #JubilantJuly.

Reading this one as research for a cult plot I'm toying around with writing. A bit of a slow start with a little too much holding back on the reveals (I felt I needed them earlier to be truly hooked), but some deft plotting now that I'm a chunk of the way in. I'm digging the vigilante heroine and the cult insights, but not sold on the importance of the supporting cast yet (at page 150 so far.) #currentreads #currentlyreading

I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as the first book in this series due to the child abuse I think. It may also be that I read The Informationist but listened to The Innocent. I might be done with this series.

Starting the audiobook sequel to The Informationist. Also trying out Libby as the Overdrive replacement.

Thriller Audio Book 2 OK, if I had read this one first I would not have continued. It felt like a first ever novel and that it may have been a form of semi autobiographical catharsis from being part of a cult. Overall, I disliked it but still like the main characters. if #3 is the same I won't finish. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/us/13ttstevens.html +

Pickpick

given what her author bio says about Ms Stevens's upbringing in a cult, the details that provide the backdrop for this book are chilling and troubling and heartbreaking.
the plot and pacing are again, excellent, and the character of Munroe continues to intrigue.
