This is a World War II novel, set in Nazi-occupied Norway, and told from three perspectives. Kari, a young woman who wants more out of life than her father's rundown farm can offer her. Kari's father, a man who was left broken by his wife's death and finds himself unable to connect with his daughter. A Nazi officer who feels he's being forced to keep order in Norway as some sort of punishment. The characters needed fleshed out more.

I picked this book up on Netgalley for free. I wanted to read it because I had never seen a WWII novel set in Norway before. A farm girl finds a downed US pilot and tries to help him get out of Nazi-occupied Norway by leading him to the Swedish border. She fantasizes that he will reward her by taking her away to the US. There is good writing in many places, but not consistently. Also, the ending was a bit rushed. Good debut overall, though.

Ugh - jury duty today. Hopefully, it will give me plenty of time to finish this book.

One of my favorite things about my Kindle is being able to look up words that I don't understand. Not SUPER thrilled that it goes through Wikipedia, lol, but beggars and choosers and all that...
This book isn't a bad book, it's just that there are other WWII novels that strike me as better. Kjeldsen does have a way w/ words and the novel is very atmospheric, but the character growth seemed forced. 👇🏻
