A powerful, award-winning novel about friendship. Phyllisia Cathy She is fourteen. Her problems seem overwhelming: New York, after life on her sunlit West Indies island, is cold, cruel and filthy. She is insulted daily and is beaten up by classmates. What Phyllisia needs, God not being interested, is a friend. Edith Jackson She is fifteen. Her clothes are unpressed, her stockings bagging with big holes. Her knowledge of school is zero. She has no parents, she swears and she steals. But she is kind and offers her friendship and protection to Phyllisia. And so begins the struggle that is the heart of this very important book: the fight to gain perception of one s own real character; the grim struggle for self-knowledge. #SelfImprovementSept - Friends: This is a favorite book from my childhood. Rosa Guy was a favorite author because she put stories in front of me that had a sense of familiarity. She wrote about African-American children in African-American neighborhoods and communities. She filled them with Afrocentric culture. Most importantly and significant she put beautiful brown-skinned faces in all their lovely hues on the front cover!👇🏽

Nute Hard to believe, but that was a rare gift! I discovered this book about friendship at the right time and it became mighty important to me as a young girl in middle school trying to figure out other girls and find the one friend or group of girlfriends made for me. We all know how treacherous that journey can be.👇🏽 (edited) 5y

Nute This book helped me know what kind of friend I wanted to be and who I was searching for.
I couldn‘t find my copy. I‘ve looked everywhere. I know that I would not get rid of it, but it‘s been a long time. I recreated a digital cover of the 1974 edition for this Litsy post. Highly recommended!

CaliforniaCay I love this. Hearing stories likes this reminds me of why I want to go into book publishing myself. I want to help authors of all genders, colors, backgrounds get their stories out there. Stories with characters in the minority, so that more people can see themselves represented in the books that they read 💜💚💙 5y
