The title story starts off as a kind of noir thriller and blew me away when I got into the rhythm of it. The rest of these stories are so of a time and place I know nothing about and just kept me enthralled. These don‘t deal outright with the politics of Shanghai during the war but of the people living there. The modern and the old grate against each other whilst people just try to go about their lives as usual. Continued in comments
Weaponxgirl Since I don‘t know much about the time period in Shanghai or certain Chinese customs, traditions or proper etiquette I did feel like sometimes I was missing on the subtlety of what some of these stories were telling me but I loved just being transported to a world I don‘t know well at all. 6y
Weaponxgirl She is also a writer who describes the physical world around in quite a lot of detail which adds to the sense of place. Things such as gold chains on a cloak so as not to appear vulgar. I will be searching out more from this author and maybe trying to do some research on what life was like then 6y
