Times New Romanian
Times New Romanian: Voices and Narrative from Romania | Nigel Shakespear
2 posts | 6 to read
In Romania anything is possible, everything is impossible, and nothing is ever as it seems. Times New Romanian provides a picture of Romania today through the individual first-person narratives of people who chose to go and make a life in this country. Each chapter a voice, each story in Times New Romanian provides readers with a look into the Romanian world the way things work, the vitality of the people, the living heritage of rural traditions, ordinary life sometimes dark, sometimes sublime, always interesting. In a land full of character and contradiction, there is a strong attraction for those with the spirit to meet the challenges, where the one thing you can be sure of is the unpredictable. Life is not always easy. These stories will tell you why... If you want to know more about Romanians and their country, the voices in Times New Romanian make for an enjoyable and lively read. Inspired by Studs Terkel and Tony Parker, Nigel used their oral history style and his own experience in Romania to guide him in recording these interviews. Featured in The Bookseller

So there is a bright side when having a bout of anxiety/depression: retail therapy. Luckily I had some gift cards from Santa and I really wanted this in print edition. There are few well-rated histories of Romania out there in English, but this one is one of them & I'm really excited to read it ☺️ #bookmail

Does anyone find a book that looks fantastic and the kindle version is much cheaper, but you feel like it needs to be part of your print library? I'm so conflicted! This book looks so good 😩😩 (I find this happens mostly with nonfiction. And I'm holding out hope Santa leaves me Amazon/Barnes and Noble gift cards)

MidnightBookGirl The struggle is real, and there are many books that I have in multiple format because of that. 8y
Kitta I'm interested in reading some books about Romania, do you have any others you'd recommend? 8y
Alisnazzy @Kitta I really don't. That's why this one sounds so intriguing. 8y

Kitta Thanks anyway! Well, I'll add this to my TBR and give me a shout if you'd recommend any more! 8y
Alisnazzy @Kitta No problem! I've been trying to find a good history of Romania that doesn't just deal with Vlad the Impaler and all I've been able to find is pre-Ceausescu and that's a big part of the country's history so I've avoided those older books. But I think this book was published within the last 3 years. 8y
Kitta My grandmother was actually from Romania, but came to Canada as an orphan with her sister when she was 6. I realised recently that I know next to nothing about it and want to know more! 8y
Kitta I'm going to try to read everything I can get my hands on 😊 8y
