"Lots of characters get compared to my own Jack Reacher, but Petries Peter Ash is the real deal."--Lee Child In the new novel featuring war veteran Peter Ash, an action hero of the likes of Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne (Lincoln Journal-Star), Ash has a womans life in his handsand her mystery is stranger than he could ever imagine. War veteran Peter Ash sought peace and quiet among the towering redwoods of northern California, but the trip isnt quite the balm hed hoped for. The dense forest and close fog cause his claustrophobia to buzz and spark, and then he stumbles upon a grizzly, long thought to have vanished from this part of the country. In a fight of man against bear, Peter doesnt favor his odds, so he makes a strategic retreat up a nearby sapling. There, he finds something strange: a climbing rope, affixed to a distant branch above. It leads to another, and another, up through the giant tree canopy, and ending at a hanging platform. On the platform is a woman on the run. From below them come the sounds of men and gunshots. Just days ago, investigative journalist June Cassidy escaped a kidnapping by the men who are still on her trail. She suspects theyre after something belonging to her mother, a prominent software designer who recently died in an accident. June needs time to figure out whats going on, and help from someone with Peters particular set of skills. Only one step ahead of their pursuers, Peter and June must race to unravel this peculiar mystery. What they find leads them to an eccentric recluse, a shadowy pseudo-military organization, and an extraordinary tool that may change the modern world forever.

Good pacing and I still really enjoy the Peter Ash character and the new character, June as well as some revisits from the lady book. I also liked how Ash is developing and his awareness of having to deal with his ptsd. I wasn‘t a fan of where the plot went but I‘m not that into conspiracy theories or over the top computer stuff. But I hope June and some of the other characters come into play in the next book.

This like others from Nick Petrie is action packed! Starting with a walk in the woods, trying to escape his PTSD, Peter Ash encounters a grizzly, a tree top adventure, a woman, hired guns, a high speed chase. This is only part one. Peter has met June Cassidy and it's his mission to protect. Awesome!!

Peter Ash is one of my new favorite characters. And I hope June continues into the next book. While fiction, the technology in the book is scarily realistic. Hopefully, it's far into the future. And I loved this quote after Peter zip lines in the redwoods - almost makes me want to try it...almost.

The second book in the Peter Ash series is less focused but still a lot of fun.

My whole review is here.

Finished Say Nothing and started this one. Liked the first book. Great stuff if you like the Reacher style kick ass action stories. Even better the book starts with a Grizzly bear altercation!

Conspiracy-theory, fugitive from the law, car chase books aren't my usual choice of reading material but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters' quick wit and banter make them entertaining and enduring. I would definitely recommend. This is the second book in the series but I did not read the first and I do not feel like I missed anything. I received a free advanced copy of this book for review consideration. #burningbright #nickpetrie
