Charlotte was born in Thornton, west of Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1816, the third of the six children of Maria (nee Branwell) and Patrick Bronte (formerly surnamed Brunty or Prunty), an Irish Anglican clergyman. In 1820 her family moved a few miles to the village of Haworth, where her father had been appointed perpetual curate of St Michael and All Angels Church. Maria died of cancer on 15 September 1821, leaving five daughters, Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Emily and Anne, and a son, Branwell, to be taken care of by her sister, Elizabeth Branwell"

#bookspinbingo for November!! I am feeling apprehensive about this month's #bookspin you know when you buy a book trying to be all educated and expanding your 'classic' book knowledge... And then you start to worry it's just going to be a slog 😬😬 hoping to be proven wrong!!

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Looks great!! Good luck and if worst comes to worst ... DNFs count!! 😂 4y

I started this but also almost stoped. I'm not sure if it's for me. It seems a difficult one to get into... 🤔

Reviewsbylola I‘ve been meaning to read this one. 5y

Anyone else find the continued poking at Sir Philip‘s lame poetry delightful? It makes me smile every time they talk about his rhymes and how he believes that equals poetry. I particularly like this passage when one of his ballads is to be played “it was the least elaborate, the least affected — out of comparison the best of his numerous efforts.” Damning by faint praise. 😂. #shirlitesunite

merelybookish He's a fun character study. Nice guy, but too bad about the poetry writing. 😛 6y
Blaire @merelybookish yes, the chapter with the conversation between Shirley and mr. Sympson after she turns down Philip is making me laugh out loud. He is a fun character - it‘s needed lightness. (edited) 6y
saresmoore Yes, I love it! 6y

“Reader, when you behold an aspect for whose constant gloom and drown you cannot account...be sure that there is a canker somewhere, and a canker not less deeply corroding because concealed.” Love this advice - you never know someone‘s story. More than likely there is a reason that has nothing to do with you. Doing a little sunrise reading and still #waitingforshirley to appear. #shirlitesunite

Blaire Yes - finally a mention of Shirley!!! 6y
andrew61 Just read that part and carolina is clearly a lovely character who seems to understand the loneliness of miss mann. A nice quote. 6y
merelybookish I noted that passage too! I liked that whole chapter on Old Maids and seeing beyond that label. 6y

LeahBergen I‘m ALMOST at a Shirley spotting (I peeked ahead out of desperation 😆😆). 6y
Blaire @andrew61 @merelybookish Agreed. I love the perspective she brings and how she is willing to look beyond stereotypes. 6y
Blaire @LeahBergen right!?! I wanted to give a little shout out loud when her name finally appeared. 6y

#shirlitesunite Now that I‘m in the chapters about Caroline, I am starting to feel more drawn into the book. Loved the narrators observations about being 18 and this passage where Caroline is thinking about women must react differently from men.

saresmoore I‘m really enjoying Caroline, too. 6y
batsy Yes! I also highlighted that passage about being 18. I like what I've seen of Caroline, too. 6y
Blaire @batsy it was good! The hope and expectations. 💕💕💕 6y

merelybookish Yes, I like Caroline and feel her despair. I liked how it described how she's not even able to ask Robert about his changed manner. 6y
LeahBergen I was the same! It was a bit of a slog until Caroline showed up. 6y
Blaire @LeahBergen yes! Before I was having trouble following all the curates. Now I feel like there‘s some nice tension and she‘s such a good character. 6y
