A compelling and realistic graphic novel. The author develops layered characters who are far from one-dimensional to give a message of healing and recovery that is not too heavy-handed. I thought it glossed over the decision to change and the end results without addressing some practical concerns, but that is a minor critique. The art is really effective.

Not feeling up to leaving the house. Might as well kick off my next library read if I'm going to be stuck home alone on a Friday evening. Actually, I think I would prefer this even if I was feeling well enough to leave the house.

Don‘t know quite what to say about this other than you need to read it, along with all Canadians.

It's about an aboriginal boy in Alberta. Through his story we learn how messed up Canada's history really is.

Wow... just wow. Heartbreakingly conveys the intergenerational trauma of our First Nations people. Perfect use of the graphic novel format.

really enjoyed reading this one, while its not always an easy read - residential schools & gang violence usually isn't - it is both an important one & a good story at the same time 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I finished THE OUTSIDE CIRCLE. Which indigenous YA should I read next?

"Your spirit name is 'waking bear'. The bear you saw last night was your protector. He came to visit and to make himself known. What I understand is that he has woken up from a long winter sleep."

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this release, and I must say it deserves it. This graphic novel is amazing. Relevant, powerful, and unbelievably important. We need to talk more about the issues presented here, we need to find a way to reconcile. This will not solve everything, but mainstream representations of the lingering issues faced by aboriginal people such as the one found in this novel are a start. Read it. Listen. Learn.
