We check this book out from the library every Thanksgiving, but this year we decided to buy it.

I want my kids to know the story of Thanksgiving from the perspective of a Native American, which is exactly what Joseph Bruchac gives us.

Squanto‘s story is fascinating, and it‘s important for us to know how he was sold into slavery, and yet he chose to work toward peace for the sake of his people.

Libby1 Wow. What an amazing story. Thanks for sharing this. 7y
abbylibrarian Maybe worth noting that this book is on American Indians in Children‘s Lit‘s books to avoid list: https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2014/11/oyates-list-of... (edited) 7y
BookInMyHands @abbylibrarian I follow Debbie Reese‘s blog, but this one I would like to know more about the concerns, which I don‘t see on her website. Bruchac is Native American, as is his wife who helped research the book. 7y

abbylibrarian @BookInMyHands Yeah, I haven‘t read it so I don‘t know. When we were looking at our Thanksgiving books at our library with an eye to providing actual information rather than myths we basically discovered we‘d have to weed almost our entire collection. 😬 7y
BookInMyHands @abbylibrarian Oh yeah, our collection was awful too. Something that I like that we‘ve done is our Awards Shelf. We have Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre, American Indian Children‘s Book Award, Asian Pacific Children‘s Book Award, Schneider Family Book Award, + the usual Caldecott, etc. I use it as a starting place for people who are looking for diverse reads. 7y
abbylibrarian @BookInMyHands LOVE that! Great idea! 7y

Pickpick

We read this story as a family today and my kids found it fascinating. Squanto's Journey tells his story from Patuxet to Spain as a slave, to England and back to the Americas again as an interpreter. I appreciated the story of the first Thanksgiving from the perspective of a Native American.

Also, because of this book I got most of the Thanksgiving trivia right at the table today.

WordWaller I need this! My friend who works on a reservation was telling me about it yesterday 8y
BookInMyHands @WordWaller That's awesome! I've also read enjoyed books from the list of American Indian Youth Literature Award winners and the blog by Debbie Reese in Native Americans in youth literature. 8y
