Jonah's Gourd Vine
Jonah's Gourd Vine | Zora Neale Hurston
8 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
Jonah's Gourd Vine, Zora Neale Hurston's first novel, originally published in 1934, tells the story of John Buddy Pearson, "a living exultation" of a young man who loves too many women for his own good. Lucy, his long-suffering wife, is his true love, but there's also Mehaley and Big 'Oman, as well as the scheming Hattie, who conjures hoodoo spells to ensure his attentions. Even after becoming the popular pastor of Zion Hope, where his sermons and prayers for cleansing rouse the congregation's fervor, John has to confess that though he is a preacher on Sundays, he is a "natchel man" the rest of the week. And so in this sympathetic portrait of a man and his community, Zora Neale Hurston shows that faith, tolerance, and good intentions cannot resolve the tension between the spiritual and the physical. That she makes this age-old dilemma come so alive is a tribute to her understanding of the vagaries of human nature.

Zora Neale Hurston's debut novel, Jonah's Gourd Vine, is a story of rural black culture, from folk preaching to dysfunctional marriages to the railroad.

I have to get through chapter 11 by tomorrow night and I am STRUGGLING. I am terrible at reading books with written dialect and all of the dialogue in this is phonetically written. I have never finished a Mark Twain book in my entire life, this is a serious challenge for me. #studentlife #afamlit

It's amazing how language works and some saying stick around those throughout generations. (from page 120)

I'm such a horrible book club owner. I am only on Chapter 6... It's just been hard to make myself read this book. It's not the books fault by l but for some reason I fear that I might end up hating Zora Neale Hurston and have to put her on my "Do Not Read" list.

#BookishConfession time. I'm don't think I really care for Zora Neale Hurston. I remember having a hard time getting through the first half of Thier Eyes Where Watching God and I haven't been able to pick this one up since reading the first chapter. It's for my book club and we meet on Saturday.

BookishMarginalia Have you tried with an audiobook version? My students and I really enjoyed Ruby Dee's narration of Their Eyes Were Watching God. 8y
MoniqueReads305 @BookishMarginalia That's a great suggestions but my library doesn't have it and I used up all my Audible credits. 😑 8y

BookishFeminist @MoniqueReads305 Is there anything you can return on Audible to get that credit back? 👀 8y
MoniqueReads305 @BookishFeminist I would but I want to listen to all the audiobooks I own. And it's been months since I purchased so I don't think I can take anything back. 8y
MoniqueReads305 I did some investigating and it seems that Jonah's Gourd Vine hasn't been made into an audiobook yet. @BookishFeminist @BookishMarginalia @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 8y
Donna_sBookMinute You can return anything you've purchased within the last 365 days. 8y
MoniqueReads305 @Donna_sBookMinute I didn't know that. It's good to know for the future. 8y

Book #2 for 2017 is Jonah's Gourd Vine by Zora Neale Hurston. This is the second Hurston book that I have read, the first was Their Eyes Were Watching God. I'm not sure what to expect since this is but her most well know work.
