Get Jiro! | Anthony Bourdain, Joel Rose
5 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
A"New York Times"Bestseller In a not-too-distant future L.A. where master chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurants, a bloody culinary war is raging. On one side, the Internationalists, who blend foods from all over the world into exotic delights. On the other, the "Vertical Farm," who prepare nothing but organic, vegetarian, macrobiotic dishes. Into this maelstrom steps Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi chef, known to decapitate patrons who dare request a California Roll, or who stir wasabi into their soy sauce. Both sides want Jiro to join their factions. Jiro, however has bigger ideas, and in the end, no chef may be left alive! Anthony Bourdain, top chef, acclaimed writer (Kitchen Confidential, Medium Raw) and star of the hit travel show, No Reservations, co-writes with Joel Rose (Kill Kill Faster Faster, The Blackest Bird) this stylized send-up of food culture and society, with detailed and dynamic art by Langdon Foss."

Wasn‘t a fan of this. My least favorite part of watching/reading Bourdain‘s works are his opinions about America‘s food culture. In his graphic novel, a corporate chef and a locavore chef battle for control of the upscale dining market. But Jiro, an edo-style sushi chef, and other upholders of food traditions battle back for control of America‘s stomachs. I also never appreciate his fat shaming. That really kills me about him. #hoopla

As part of final torture, chefs are fed meat substitute and rice-a-rhino. Awesome. This is a dark view of culinary rivalry, likely based on a shred of metaphoric truth. Some food snobbery might look frighteningly accurate. There are moments when you feel Bourdain‘s Inner Ring knowledge - that is what makes the grain of truth stand out. The full circle of the taco cart and California roll jokes is a nice nod to things Bourdain has hinted elsewhere.

This was better then I thought it would be! In this slightly dystopian world food dominates all, and 2 rival groups control all the food. But not everyone aligns with either group, in comes Jiro...

In a world where sports and the entertainment industry have crumbled to dust, the Chef reigns supreme! Caught between opposing sides of a culinary war for control for L.A., Jiro does what he knows best. He makes the worlds best sushi, and takes out anyone in his way! I love that Anthony Bourdain was a writer for this!

Mehso-so

Enjoyed the illustrations but found the story lacking. Maybe I was expecting the satire to be funnier?
