Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia | David Hunt
7 posts | 11 read | 9 to read
Girt. No word could better capture the essence of Australia ... In this hilarious history, David Hunt reveals the truth of Australia's past, from megafauna to Macquarie - the cock-ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are. Girt introduces forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the crime of "felony of sock," and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia. It recounts the misfortunes of the escaped Irish convicts who set out to walk from Sydney to China, guided only by a hand-drawn paper compass, and explains the role of the coconut in Australia's only military coup. Our nation's beginnings are steeped in the strange, the ridiculous and the frankly bizarre. Girt proudly reclaims these stories for all of us. Not to read it would be un-Australian "A sneaky, sometimes shocking peek under the dirty rug of Australian history." - John Birmingham "Hilarious and insightful -- Hunt has found the deep wells of humour in Australia's history." - Chris Taylor, The Chaser

Talks about the interesting colonial times of the Lucky Country 🦘, where James Cook thought Downunder was Indonesia because it just lies on Indian Ocean 🌊, but it was beautiful Australia (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)..Keeping read the two books 📚 are free on Kindle Unlimited✌️

Pickpick

Will give this a pick, but also a warning, this is a very tongue in cheek telling of Australian history and is in no way politically correct. This book tells from the prehistory of the aboriginal people, to early exploration through to the establishment of the penal colony at Sydney ending with the recall of Governor Macquarie. And a sordid history it is, drunken orgies, extermination of the original inhabitants and the corruption of the Rum Corp

Heard a lot about this book and then Audible Australia had it as a free download this month. Hooray! This is a great book on Audio. Very amusing and is a legit history that includes indigenous populations. Really like this one. Although I could do without the accents. He is doing them for all nationalities but still a little .....

Mehso-so

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was amusing and informative, but at times felt racially insensitive. Perhaps it was the audio versions attempt at 'voices' that made me cringe more than once.

arlenefinnigan I REALLY wish audiobook narrators wouldn't 'do voices'. The 'Queen's English' narrator of The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher by Hilary Mantel attempting a Liverpool accent made me throw my phone across the room. 8y
