Welcome to the 60's sci-fi of Barjavel, where women are only valued for their beauty, are the only ones who ever cry and are mainly just preoccupied with shallow things or romance/sex, and where black people actually come from another planet (imported by whites, naturally). This is a pathetic attempt at a futuristic Romeo & Juliet that has most certainly not aged well. #scifi

Still hating this book, but it has gotten somewhat less nauseating. Currently in the Keys, Florida 😎

MrBook I want to go to the Keys! Never been there 😔. 8y
ValerieAndBooks I've never been-- would love to and visit Hemingway's old stomping grounds! 8y
Scurvygirl I would have to say everything is less nauseating in the Keys!! 8y
tricours @MrBook @ValerieAndBooks @Scurvygirl We've only been one day in Key Largo, but we're heading to Key West tomorrow, where I hope things will be more... alive 😬Apparently Thanksgiving means everyone leaves this place. Awesome weather though! 8y

I NEED SOMETHING STRONGER THAN WINE TO PUT UP WITH THIS MISOGYNISTIC SHIT!

Libby1 I can't read it but I'll take your word for it! 8y
Suzze I see masculine & feminine..... 8y
Kirstin Oh dear! How old is this book? 😂😱 8y
tricours @Kirstin it's from like the 60's! One would think 19th century though... 8y

Uh... I don't know. Discoveries in retro sci-fi are a bit... silly. Some nasty bacteria or so would have been way more exciting than what they apparently thought was cool in the 60's 😒

MrBook 😂👏🏻🙌🏻 8y
CoffeeAndABook I don't know what they thought was cool but it sounds like it's bad if bacteria is exciting by comparison 😂😂😂some things don't age well... 😉 I hope that wine makes up for it 🍷🤘🏻 8y
tricours @CoffeeAndABook it's just... too weird!! A bit like how you snort at the science in a Jules Verne book, but then that's from the 19th century, so it's more "aww, cute", whereas this *really* isn't. And a bottle of Prosecco will soften any literary blow ?? 8y

This is my second French "retro sci-fi" (or retro dystopia) and just like with the first, it's full of male chauvinist comments. At least all the women are not made out to be moronic whores in this book, they are just shallow and frail. The French are such a nice bunch ?

I-read-and-eat He's surprised she doesn't recognize gold right? Because as a woman she should (because women love jewelery? ) Is that what is says, my french is not great but I'm so curious what is says 😂 8y
tricours @I-read-and-eat that's right! Two pages later she is called "sweetie pie" and a man explains to her that there were no cats millions of years ago (when she makes a sarcastic remark about a cat flap in an ancient structure) and then wants to cuddle her chin. She's the Russian chief engineer or something. 8y
tricours She's also the prettiest woman of the expedition! Important info! 8y

This starts absolutely brilliantly (some eerie, disastrous discovery in the Antarctic, can it get any better?) so from now on I can only be disappointed.
