Crusade for Justice
Crusade for Justice: The Autobiography of Ida B. Wells | Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was one of the foremost crusaders against black oppression. This engaging memoir tells of her private life as mother of a growing family as well as her public activities as teacher, lecturer, and journalist in her fight against attitudes and laws oppressing blacks. "No student of black history should overlook Crusade for Justice."William M. Tuttle, Jr., Journal of American History "Besides being the story of an incredibly courageous and outspoken black woman in the face of innumerable odds, the book is a valuable contribution to the social history of the United States and to the literature of the women's movement as well."Elizabeth Kolmer, American Quarterly "[Wells was] a sophisticated fighter whose prose was as though as her intellect."Walter Goodman, New York Times "An illuminating narrative of a zealous, race-conscious, civic- and church-minded black woman reformer, whose life story is a significant chapter in the history of Negro-White relations."Thelma D. Perry, Negro History Bulletin

In the wake of US election results, in the midst of other local activism planning, I‘m finding some small comfort in looking through my shelves to find books which will inspire me to keep going, keep fighting. These are books I‘m going to move up my TBR for the near future. I‘m sure I‘ll add to the stack as I look through my library more. Are there any books y‘all are thinking about these days?

TheBookHippie A bit of what we did in the 1980s is helpful 2w

#12Booksof2022 my pick for best of March.A remarkable autobiography of a woman who would not be stopped when it came to fighting for justice. They burned down her newspaper office, she was threatened constantly, but still continued on.One of the founders of the NAACP.

My #doublespin Jan.She just never stopped! Teacher , journalist, newspaper owner(they burned her out)She went to England holding anti lynching lectures knowing the US papers would cover it & she wouldn‘t be shouted down by racists. When she started a family late ,she still fought for individuals, established reading rooms, job training, links to the trades, a ticket for a meal.As a mother, would travel to lecture if they would provide child care.

TheBookHippie I‘ve read every book written about her she is just amazing! I keep meaning to buy myself a copy of this book. I have at least 1735784 pictures of her street sign in Chicago. ♥️ 3y
Leftcoastzen @TheBookHippie she doesn‘t even mention really how much she was in danger. I‘ve read other writers that mention it.She was so determined & did not suffer fools gladly. 3y
TheBookHippie @Leftcoastzen I admire her so much. 3y
