Escape from Alcatraz
Escape from Alcatraz: The True Crime Classic | J. Campbell Bruce
7 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
In 1963, just weeks before the original publication of this book, the last prisoner was escorted off Devils Island and Alcatraz ceased to be a prison. Author J. Campbell Bruce chronicles in spellbinding detail the Rocks transition from a Spanish fort to the maximum-security penitentiary that housed such infamous inmates as Robert Stroud, aka the Birdman of Alcatraz, and mobster Al Scarface Capone. The chapters describing the daring escape attempts by Frank Morris and two accomplices from this inescapable prison became the basis for the 1979 Clint Eastwood movie. Discover the intriguing and absorbing saga of Alcatraz, whose name is still synonymous with punitive isolation and deprivation, where Americas most violent and notorious prisoners resided in tortuous proximity to one of the worlds favorite cities. The true-crime classic first published in 1963 is reissued in this special edition. Includes archival photos of the prison and prison life. This story will appeal to Bay Area locals and tourists alike. Alcatraz hosts more than a million visitors each year. From the Trade Paperback edition.

According to Wikipedia (which is not always the most reliable, but I‘ll “trust” it for this prompt), the original publication of the tagged book was 1963. It has been revised a couple times, as more details about the most famous escape take shape. The movie by the same name (with Clint Eastwood) is based on this book. #December1963 #WinterWonderland

Cinfhen Hahah trusting Wiki can be dangerous!!! But I agree, in this case it‘s fine ❤️ 6y
Kaye Do you think they made it back alive ? 6y
TrishB But it‘s always an interesting read! 6y

Librarybelle @kaye It‘s definitely a fun “what if!” My gut reaction is that they did make it, or at least one of them did. We‘ll probably never know for sure. 6y
Kaye @librarybelle. I think the same. I think they would‘ve eventually found their bodies or parts of them washed up someplace. 6y
Librarybelle @kaye Yes! I know they‘ve found random things in the Bay, but I think there would be more evidence, such as their bodies or parts of them. 6y

Pickpick

Such an enthralling read, especially after taking a tour of The Rock years back. It's mostly a detailed history of the harsh penitentiary, its infamous inmates like Al Capone and the many escape attempts. Prison bureaucracy tried to keep author Bruce, a crackerjack newspaper reporter, from getting all the facts. But he believed Morris and the Anglins really did make it off the island. And now, so do I.
