Uniquely Human
Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism | Barry M. Prizant
15 posts | 4 read | 17 to read
Autism is usually portrayed as a checklist of deficits, including difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. This perspective leads to therapies focused on ridding individuals of "autistic" symptoms. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant, an internationally renowned autism expert, offers a new and compelling paradigm: the most successful approaches to autism don't aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual's experience and what underlies the behavior.

My middle child is neurodivergent meaning he has a whole lot of diagnoses and most are neurological. We have been told that he‘s not on the Spectrum but has a lot of qualities. I found this book and read it so quick because it was so interesting. I could relate to so much of it because of my son. It was so nice though to read about the positives and that we shouldn‘t worry about him conforming. That it‘s ok to be different and unique

@JoScho giveaway. Thanks for making Litsy interesting!
One thing unique about me is that I have a tendency to hear song lyrics everywhere in conversations. For example, at work, a supervisor could tell us that something should be easy, easy....I start singing The Commodores in my head. (I‘m easy like a Sunday morning)!! It‘s not an annoying constant occurrence, but there. People don‘t always appreciate my gift!! #uniquelyyou

JoScho I love that!! Thanks for entering 💕 6y

@JoScho #uniquelyyou

Thank you for this sweet opportunity 💕
Unique: in 6th grade I was a finalist in the annual state spelling bee in Minnesota 🐝 that was sponsored by by the Minneapolis Tribune. It was fun, but I did not advance to national competition which was in DC I think. To this day I am bothered by glaring spelling errors, but particularly in educational materials (eye roll)

JoScho That is awesome! Thanks for entering 💕 6y

TheWordJar I love this! I made it to the Wisconsin State finals! 🐝🐝🐝 I wasn‘t even close to winning (I think I was 13th). I got out on “durezza.” Will never forget that word. I eventually went on in life to edit educational test materials, and it always amazed me the errors that came out of state boards of education. 🙄 6y
Eggs @RebelReader No I left MN when I was 29 and have lived in TX for 37 yrs! 6y

Eggs @TheWordJar Yay Wisconsin bee 🐝! Durezza--Google says it's Italian 🤔😮 6y
TheWordJar It is Italian! That was the first word where I asked for the full treatment—definition, sentence, word of origin. My mom said that‘s when she knew I was out. The judges said it was a musical term of Italian origin. No help for me at all!! 6y

Congratulations @JoScho, and what a fun idea for a giveaway!

One thing about me that I don't find in other people very often (at least in the US) is my intense fascination with Eurovision, and even more so, my ability to effortlessly remember each year's songs since I started watching in 2011. It's a weird party trick that doesn't serve me in any way, especially since most Americans don't even know what Eurovision is! #uniquelyyou

MrsGagnonreads2024 I love Eurovision my favorite winners are Netta, Conchita, and Emmelie. 6y
RainyDayReading I‘ve had an interest in Eurovision for a very long time but can‘t figure out how to watch it in the US 😅 I‘ve just had to look up YouTube clips in the past. 6y
JoScho That is fun 💕. Thanks for entering 😊 6y
ferskner @Endowarrior21 I'm a Loreen fan! @RainyDayReading I usually stream it through Swedish TV - www.svt.se - especially now that the YouTube clips are geoblocked. 😠 There's Swedish commentary, but it's less intrusive than how a lot of other countries do it. 6y

Congrats @JoScho on 50k!

Something unique about me is that about 10 years ago I wrote two quilt books, 100 Good Wishes and Greetings from Brazil. It was lots of work but also lots of fun. The Brazil book was meant to be the first in a series, but then the publisher went out of business, and I never sought another one.

Thanks for the #uniquelyyou giveaway @JoScho

One of the things that makes me unique is that I am a military spouse of 20 years and I lived in South Korea for almost three of those. I‘ve also visited an amusement park and an outlet mall at the DMZ between North and South Korea.

JoScho I bet you move a lot. Where do you currently live? 6y
Aloisi_tribe @JoScho We move every 3-4 years on average. We currently live in San Antonio. We‘ll be here until my husband retires then we‘re moving back home to Ohio. 6y

Thanks for a generous giveaway - the first one I‘ve ever entered.

My #uniquelyyou is that, when I was younger and cooler, I was in a Kula Shaker video for their song, Sound of Drums. I was at a gig jumping up and down and I noticed a video camera pointing at me and my friends, so I waved. Fast forward a few months, I‘m watching the chart show on a Saturday morning and, suddenly, there I am 😄

jhod Ha! Kula shaker - memories!! 6y

Congratulations on your milestone @JoScho 🎉🎉🎉

It is actually pretty hard to think of something that makes me unique, even though there are probably a hundred things to choose from.
However, something that surprises people about me, is I‘m really picky about condiments. I hate mayo, ketchup, mustard and the Danish remoulade 😐

#uniquelyyou

batsy I hear you on the condiments! I don't like ketchup and most type of BBQ sauce and can't abide a ton of mayo 😆 6y
ephemeralwaltz Like ketchup, hate mayo. And definitely hate anything with too much condiment or sauce on it 😭😭 6y
JoScho I love all the sauces! 6y

Congrats to @JoScho on you Litfulence milestone and thanks for your #uniquelyyou giveaway!

One thing that is uniquely me is I love all things Microbiology especially Infectious microorganisms. I find it fascinating that how something so tiny can be some complex and cause us to get so sick. Weird I know!!!

JoScho Lol not weird! We need people that find those kinds of things interesting. Thanks for entering and I don‘t know what happened because I for sure thought I was following you for months but it doesn‘t look like it. Fixing that now 😊💕 6y

I had such a good experience reading this book. Barry really writes this book filled with kindness and love. He wants people to see autism as a part of a person without implementing limitations or stereotypes. Each child is different and their development is an individual process. He calls for empathy, understanding and complex thinking. There is no black and white thinking when we are talking children development.

brendanmleonard Excellent review. 😄 8y
Reviewsbylola I always love to learn more now that my daughter has been diagnosed with autism. This sounds like a good perspective. 8y

Notafraidofwords @Reviewsbylola it's a great little book. I loved all the tips he talks about. Some of the things I would love to implement and some things I have implemented and have been more successful. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Reviewsbylola I know it's definitely difficult journey for parents, but it is also rewarding just like anything worth it. 8y
Megabooks Great review! 8y
amywithbooks I have worked as a behavior specialist for kids with autism for years and my son is also on the spectrum. I will need to add this to my list 🙂 8y
Notafraidofwords @avgeyer I think it's totally worth it! 8y
Malisa My little sister has autism, I'll have to give this a read as well 🙂 8y
AshleyHoss820 I'm a mother to two boys with Autism. I loved the comment about no black and white thinking. I think that applies to most children! My daughter is neurotypical and I've found that they all three have separate learning styles. I may have to add this to the TBR. ? As my husband likes to say, "If you've met one child with Autism, you've met one child with Autism." No two are exactly alike! ? 8y
Notafraidofwords @Malisa I thinks it's worth a read! 8y
Notafraidofwords @AshleyHoss820 I love that! That's so true. Every child is so different and it's so frustrating when people lump them together. Ultimately, doctors and teachers might be doing them a disservice by lumping them together. I can imagine how challenging it might be for you. If you don't mind me asking, any effective tips you can share when it comes to long tantrums? Sometimes it feels like it can go on for a while even when you try to provide comfort. 8y
AshleyHoss820 My oldest son used to thrash around on the floor and scream, etc. so I would carry him back to his room, lay him on the floor and walk away. It sounds mean, but he needed to learn how to self-soothe. Especially when it was a meltdown for something I couldn't help (i.e. He wanted to see a movie that wasn't in theaters) Sometimes I found the most effective thing to do was to ignore the behavior, talk softly and make sure he didn't hurt himself. 😊 8y
Notafraidofwords @AshleyHoss820 thanks, I understand. Redirecting sometimes works. And it keeps the child safe too. Thanks! Sometimes not everyone gets it so it's nice to know some people do. 8y
AshleyHoss820 It's nice to have someone who knows what you're talking about, someone to relate to! It can feel a little lonely sometimes! 😄 8y
Notafraidofwords @AshleyHoss820 yes, very! I agree. 8y
saguarosally I need to remind myself to read up on autism, especially with adults. About learning to self-soothe (something I never really learned so well myself), another consideration is that if they don't learn, there could be concerns of physical harm caused by a person who is 6' tall and over 200 lbs having a tantrum. 8y
Notafraidofwords @saguarosally I have to be honest, I wish he would have talked about self soothing more. I feel like all adults need to learn that as kids. I'm going to be reading more on this topic. 8y

The Associated Press called it "A must-read for anyone touched by autism." I agree. This book made me think and rethink and reflect in a meaningful way. "Autism is not an illness. It's a different way of being human."
