Winter Journey | Diane Armstrong

Diane Armstrong's bestselling fictional debut A mother's silence, a village with a terrible secret, and an Australian woman who travels to Poland to uncover the truth ... When forensic dentist Halina Shore arrives in Nowa Kalwaria to take part in a war crimes investigation, she finds herself at the centre of a bitter struggle in a community that has been divided by a grim legacy. What she does not realise is that she has also embarked on a confronting personal journey. Inspired by a true incident that took place in Poland in 1941, Diane Armstrong's powerful novel is part mystery, part forensic investigation, and a moving and confronting story of love, loss and sacrifice. 'A deeply moving and inspiring novel' GOOD READING 'A bold adventure of a novel ... Here is a consummate writer at the top of her form. A fine fictional debut from a writer who's already made her mark' CANBERRA tIMES 'Profoundly moving, compelling and superbly written' AUStRALIAN WOMEN'S WEEKLY

Based on real events: A hard story about Jews forced into a barn that was set afire in WWII. The story is about how forensics can tell the story, the tale of the racial divisions that still exist in the town, and a genealogical discovery. Questions if there is ever a point such a story shouldn‘t be told. Heartbreaking, brutal, complex. It‘s my first 5-star read of the year. Audio is brilliant. #readingeurope2020 #Poland #litsyatoz #letterW

KathyWheeler While I want to read this, I don‘t know if I can take it emotionally. 5y
Texreader @KathyWheeler It has some difficult descriptive moments but I think the author doesn‘t describe too many of them because then it‘d just be a horror book. Enough to make it clear how bad it was. 5y
KathyWheeler @Texreader I added it to my TBR. 5y

Last update, this time about my current audiobook. Inspired by true events in #Poland, this is a heartbreaking story of a forensic dentist hired to help an archeology team learn the truth about Jews locked in a barn and burned to death. Who committed this horrific crime? The Nazis? The Bolsheviks? Or Poles? Well written and well narrated. Trigger warning for some gruesome descriptions of violent deaths. #readingeurope2020

Thank you @TheSpineView for the tag!! #whichonewednesday

1. Both! I have way more paperbacks, but when an audiobook is at its best—like the tagged book—it‘s hard to beat!
2. Mystery!
3. Both. But for lactose intolerance it‘s only hot tea now. 😢

A halfway point review: A dental forensic expert is helping with an archeology dig to determine if the Russians, the Nazis, or Poles themselves were responsible for a mass murder. Excellent story, description of the dig, history, and Poland‘s hesitancy to learn if Poles could have done this to other Poles. The narration is brilliant. I chose audio over an ebook on sale because of a review by @Airykah13 Good choice. #readingeurope2020 #Poland

Thanks for the tags @TheSpineView @Centique !!

1. Yes, absolutely. Unfortunately it‘s led to a dud or two
2. Tagged, the audiobook
3. Local newspaper and online
4. Wake up immediately with an alarm almost always, but sometimes I get up earlier. Rarely and blissfully I sleep in
5. A day late! But assume you‘re tagged if you want to play anyway!

I finished this one a few days ago and I‘m surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Based on a true events, the story revolves around Halina Shore, a forensic dentist who takes part in a war crimes investigation in Poland. The investigation brings up many questions and makes her question everything she knew about her own mother and childhood. The audiobook was great because I couldn‘t pronounce any of those Polish names and cities without it. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
