Set in the wilds of Maine, this is an explosive tale of an estranged son thrust into the hunt for a murderous fugitive---his own father. Game warden Mike Bowditch returns home one evening to find an alarming voice from the past on his answering machine: his father, Jack, a hard-drinking womanizer who makes his living poaching illegal game. An even more frightening call comes the next morning from the police: They are searching for the man who killed a beloved local cop the night before---and his father is their prime suspect. Jack has escaped from police custody, and only Mike believes that his tormented father might not be guilty. Now, alienated from the woman he loves, shunned by colleagues who have no sympathy for the suspected cop killer, Mike must come to terms with his haunted past. He knows firsthand Jack's brutality, but is the man capable of murder? Desperate and alone, Mike strikes up an uneasy alliance with a retired warden pilot, and together the two men journey deep into the Maine wilderness in search of a runaway fugitive. There they meet a beautiful woman who claims to be Jack's mistress but who seems to be guarding a more dangerous secret. The only way for Mike to save his father now is to find the real killer---which could mean putting everyone he loves in the line of fire. The Poacher's Son is a sterling debut of literary suspense. Taut and engrossing, it represents the first in a series featuring Mike Bowditch.

Solid first book launching the Mike Bowditch series. Set in Maine, Bowditch works as a game warden. One morning he gets a call that he‘s father‘s been arrested, accused of killing two people. Bowditch doesn‘t believe it for a minute and sets out, even when faced with the unrelenting criticism of people he knows, to prove his father‘s innocence. Secrets & lies & the past collide in this well-written mystery. I‘ll continue with the series.

CaitlinR I love Doiron‘s books. His new one, Pitch Dark, is great but it‘s fun to read them in order. 2w
TracyReadsBooks @CaitlinR I‘m definitely excited to read more. I always read in order because I like to see how the characters develop. It‘s great to know his new one is good! 2w

A weekend of summer hockey practices in Birmingham for my son (the ice where he normally plays isn't there all year) means I'm reading in the coldest building I've been in for months. I picked this up on vacation in Maine because it's set there and I wanted to read it while the place was still fresh in my mind--also, it takes place in August.

Maine game warden Mike Bowditch risks everything to investigate murders for which his estranged father may be responsible.

Many compare Doiron to Nevada Barr. I‘ve read all of the Anna Pigeon books — I think Paul Doiron May be better.

EadieB @CaitlinR This series only gets better and better. (edited) 6y
CaitlinR @EadieB Good to know. I just got TRESPASSER at the Library. Can‘t wait! 6y
EadieB @CaitlinR I think I have only read books 1-3. 6y

Figured since I read the newest in the series, I should go back and start at the beginning, and it was a great start to the series. I liked seeing how the relationship between Charley and Mike started. Now onto number 2 in the series.

I‘m very excited to start this series...purchased books 2-9(?-it may be more, is it horrible I can‘t remember?!? I have a problem) at my local used book store and finally got this one in the mail to kick it all off.

So....I guess I love this series! You guys, life has been hella crazy up in here - end of a 7-year relationship, purchase of my first home, three consecutive weekends of moving our stuff to our respective and separate places (buy stock in Uhaul! DO IT NOW!), a dog with separation anxiety, and as much hunkering-down-with-a-good-book as possible. I live in Maine and these crime novels are fixin‘ what ails me! Hard crush on Warden Mike Bowditch. 😘

Ashley_Nicoletto I'm glad you found some escape from the chaos. ❤️ Yay to you on your next adventure. 7y

I've been having bad luck choosing good books lately. I finally found a winner. Couldn't put it down. A story about a Maine Game Warden- but oh so much more. Definitely worth a read!
