I believe that this book could be best utilized in a pre-k classroom in order to introduce and or practice the classification and spelling of various colors.

The illustrations in this story contain use of value and highly intense, vibrant colors. Value is present in the use of various shades ranging from black to white to construct the engine of the train, the smoke clouds produced by the train, and the depiction of nighttime. Vibrant colors are visible as they represent each “part“ or car that helps to compose the train. Loosely formed lines are also used in order to depict the movement of the train.

“Moving in daylight. Going, going... gone.“

I would use this book to help children distinguish their colors from one another. As it talks about the red car, the words are red, and it uses the word “red“ in that sentence. Therefore, children can associate the word “red“ while looking at the color.

“The Freight Train“ was a book published in 1978. This book was brought into our college classroom by Dawn Mooney. Throughout the book, the words describing that train car match the color of the train car. For example, when it talks about the blue car, the words are blue. The pictures blend the train cars together to show that the train is moving fast. When the colors are not blended together the train is stopped. The page is black to show night.

This book won the Caldecott Honor award. It is a RF picture book that describes the colors and movement of a freight train through beautiful illustrations. This book would best be read using partner reading. This allows our students to comprehend what is being read while taking turns with a buddy. This can be a comprehensive way for students to give feedback to one another & practice reading aloud.

I think this would be a good book for preschoolers.

“Moving in darkness“

This book was okay, it talks about the names of the parts of a train and works with colors for every different part.

This book had few words so I‘d like to share my favorite illustration.

The illustrations are so beautiful in this book! I would love to have this to read to the children at the CDC!

Freight Train by Donald Crews is a picture book that was created in 1978. This book is great for children who are learning their colors because it has great visuals. It also helps children learn about the parts of a train. The illustrations are beautiful! As the book continues on and the train is moving all the colors of the cars mesh together and it looks so pretty! I think children would find this interesting because of the illustrations!

“Going, going, going gone“ This is the last two pages of the book. The train illustration gets closer and closer to the end of the page until there is nothing but tracks.

I think this would be a good book to first read as a class, and then leave out for children to read during their own free time. The illustrations are very captivating, so I can see kids wanting to go back and re-read.

Freight Train by Donald Crews, 1978. Caldecott Honor Award. This is a very colorful and quick read. Each car in the train is labeled and drawn a color of the rainbow, which can help young readers learn their colors. This book is also right on tap with young children's interests.

This would be useful in a classroom of preschoolers who like to play with trains or who are interested in them

This would definitely be a good book to read to younger children because it teaches different colors and relates them to words. It explains the train piece by piece, then puts it all together.

I love the way the other out together this book and matched the words with the illustrations. I also found it really cool that the illustrations of the train make it look like it‘s moving really fast down the train tracks.

A Caldecott Honor book of 1979, Freight Train is filled with coloful illustrations of a freight train. This Caldecott Honor & Wilder Award Winner picture book is great for kids at the primary level. Although the content and layout is simple, the opportunity to learn new vocabulary and concepts such as modern technology is there.
