This is the 4th Chief Inspector Adamsberg mystery in the series, and, WOW! These have got to be the oddest mysteries I have ever read, and I love them. It is difficult to give a synopsis, but there is a town crier, disturbing messages, talismans, the plague, toxic siblings, murder, and, yes, all in the 21st century. Adamsberg is his at his quirkiest, most intuitive self, with his difficult relationships with his fellow human beings. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tamra That is intriguing! 5y

Inspector adamsberg is a curious creation, intellectual, other wordly, he solves crimes by reflecting on the facts and intuition. Here a town crier in a paris suburb anounces anonymous messages of which a series foretell the return of black death, when doors are marked with a backward four adamsberg investigates and soon bodies pile up. Gentle, enjoyable and curious although on bk 3 but who knows the order of translation and publication!!

rwmg I go by the order in the wikipedia article on Fred Vargas 5y
CarolynM I've read a few of these. They're good. 5y
andrew61 @rwmg thanks, it seems some haven't been published in English and others out of sync but I'll have a look as i like with series to read chronologically. 5y
rwmg @andrew61 So do I, but it seems the only ones not translated are the graphic novel and the novellas 5y

On the 21 of December Littens chase the dark away by opening #secretsantagoespostal 📦, sharing amazing photos of the joy and happiness spreading love all around. Best way to chase the dark away. Be brave, winter is here but the days start to be longer. Fred Vargas, one of my favorite writer, created Jean Baptiste Adamsberg who chases the dark away in these wonderful mysteries. #survivingdecember
