Citizen Girl
Citizen Girl | Emma McLaughlin, Nicola Kraus
3 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Another biting satire from Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Nanny Diaries. Working in a world where a college degree qualifies her to make photocopies and color-coordinate file folders, twenty-four-year-old Girl is struggling to keep up with the essential trinity of food, shelter, and student loans. So when she finally lands the job of her dreams she ignores her misgivings and concentrates on getting the job done...whatever that may be. Sharply observed and devastatingly funny, Citizen Girl captures with biting accuracy what it means to be young and female in the new economy. A personal glimpse into an impersonal world, Citizen Girl is edgy and heartfelt, an entertaining read that is startlingly relevant.

This was my #DoubleSpin for May and this book, it‘s not great, Bob. It‘s a satire and I think it‘s trying to say something about women, start-up culture, and what it means to sell out, but didn‘t really get there. All the characters are unpleasant and some of what happens is just gross. Also it‘s from 2005 so it is pretty dated. This was a used bookstore find and at least it was a fast read that only cost 50 cents.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes those used books have been abandoned for a reason! 😬 5y
MallenNC @TheAromaofBooks Very true. This one didn‘t look like it had been read much either. 5y

I enjoyed The Nanny Diaries. I understand this book was meant as a satire, but...no. First of all, the main character‘s name is Girl 😑

The characters were SO annoying that I didn‘t finish this book. I was about halfway through and I thought I could finish it, but then I thought...I have so many more books I want to read. Girl, bye 👋😏

My review of this book is one of the most popular on my site (so far)! Pretty rad. I liked the book, but it could‘ve been better. You‘re left hungry because of je ne sais quoi.
