The neighborhood children call him the Pee-can Man; their mothers call them inside whenever he appears. When the police chief's son is found stabbed to death near his camp, the man Ora knows as Eddie is arrested and charged with murder. Described as a cross between The Help and To Kill A Mockingbird, this novel started strong and touched on some relevant topics of the 1960s-1970s southern U.S.: race, sexual assault, murder, and secrets. There is a sequel as well.

Day one of the #oriliumreadathon Instagram challenges.

Prompt: TBR

Since I‘ve posted my main TBR already these are the books to complete some Questing I‘d like to do if I have time.

I am not sure what to think about this one. There were interesting parts and characters but if felt like something was missing. Not sure.

Forgot to post... this was okay as a novella. I felt like some characters were poorly developed, your real bad guy was kind of a ghost and everything moved strangely fast at the end as if to just tie everything off. I understood how Ora felt that the racism in the area was unjust and how awkward she felt because she didn't see it the same way. I'd like to see this twice the length to get real story development.

Current read for #IRLbookclub which we hopefully won't have to cancel. It's not awful but I feel like it's taking me away from more important reads... 😒

#24in48 #yourfavoriteone

I won't be reaching that elusive 24 hour mark but I completed my 4th book and this has been my favorite of the readathon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this slim novel that packs quite a punch and a whole lot into it. Set in Florida in the 1970's widowed Ora Lee befriends the Pecan Man and their lives change forever.

Narrator was good, but the writing was just okay. I liked how the story showed that a lie, even if told for the right reason, can still have a lot of negative consequences. On the downside, I found it a little hard to understand how a white woman in the south was constantly surprised by the racism directed at her African-American maid and gardener. She does acknowledge her complicity as well, so not sure why she was so shocked by it all the time.

Starting this audiobook at the gym this afternoon. This was a random grab on Hoopla for me, but there seems to be a lot of positive reviews here on Litsy.

I ordered this book for a friend of mine - I had not heard of it before, and decided to read it myself. A short, simple story about family, race, crime and secrets in the south in the 1970s. This book both broke and warmed my heart. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LibrarianToujours Our copy at the library is always out on ILL and everyone I know who has read it has really enjoyed it. I believe it's her first and only book. 8y

This book tells such a great story of personal growth, selflessness and sacrifice. I loved it all the way through and even more so after the discovery at the end.

Halfway through this and I already highly recommend. The book is described as The Help meets To Kill a Mockingbird and it is definitely just as good as both.
