The Cornish Coast Murder
The Cornish Coast Murder: A British Library Crime Classic | John Bude
8 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
Never, even in his most optimistic moments, had he visualised a scene of this nature himself in one arm-chair, a police officer in another, and between them... a mystery. The Reverend Dodd, vicar of the quiet Cornish village of Boscawen, spends his evenings reading detective stories by the fireside but heaven forbid that the shadow of any real crime should ever fall across his seaside parish. But the vicars peace is shattered one stormy night when Julius Tregarthan, a secretive and ill-tempered magistrate, is found at his house in Boscawen with a bullet through his head. The local police inspector is baffled by the complete absence of clues. Luckily for Inspector Bigswell, the Reverend Dodd is on hand, and ready to put his keen understanding of the criminal mind to the test. This classic mystery novel of the golden age of British crime fiction is set against the vividly described backdrop of a fishing village on Cornwalls Atlantic coast. It is now republished for the first time since the 1930s with an introduction by the award-winning crime writer Mar tin Edwards.

Really enjoyable classic mystery - my first by this author. The ending was a bit of a stretch but enjoyed it nonetheless.

My final book of the #24in48 readathon! I liked this Golden Age mystery and thought the plot was very clever. It‘s interesting that the book focuses far more on the detectives than on the victim and suspects; I would have liked those characters to be a little more fleshed out. But a good read overall!

Turns out this was Bude‘s first book so I give it a bit of a pass on the weaknesses of the plot. But it‘s a fun golden age mystery not quite of the standard of the author‘s who get name-checked by the detective story mad vicar who stumbles across a murder in his parish.

jillrhudy Wow! I just checked this exact copy out of the library because the 4th word was “vicar” and I have a thing for books with vicars. 6y

Whee, I actually worked this out ahead of time... mostly by looking for a character who was mentioned enough to be suspicious ("this is set up for something") without actually being suspected. It's a fun enough book, good sense of place.

On the evidence so far, I'll probably pick up Bude's other books. It's an entertaining enough mystery with some quite good dialogue and scene-setting. I'll finish it before I carry on with my assignment, I think -- I'm very curious now about whodunit. But first a little more sleep...
