Yiddish with Dick and Jane
Yiddish with Dick and Jane | Ellis Weiner, Barbara Davilman
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Jane is in real estate. Today is Saturday. Jane has an open house. She must schlep the Open House signs to the car. See Jane schlep. Schlep, Jane. Schlep. Schlep, schlep, schlep. In text that captures the unque rhythms of the original Dick and Jane readers, and in 35 all-new illustrations, a story unfolds in which Dick and Jane--hero and heroine of the classic books for children that generations of Americans have used when learning to read--manage to express shades of feeling and nuances of meaning that ordinary English just can't deliver. How? By speaking Yiddish, employing terms that convey an attitude--part plucky self-assertion, part ironic fatalism. When Dick schmoozes, when Jane kvetches, when their children fress noodles at a Chinese restaurant, the clash of cultures produces genuine hilarity.

rachmones (rahch-MUN-ness) - Compassion, fellow feeling, empathy, pity. "The Rachmones" would also make a very nice name for a sensitive Yiddish punk rock group.

schmo (shmo) - A hapless sucker, an ordinary jerk.
Slightly pejorative, but it could be worse (e.g., could be putz or schmuck).

CBee I can think of a schmo or two 😂😅🫣🤪 2mo

ibbledick (IB-bl-dick) - Literally, "nauseated,"
"barfy." Vaguely unwell, out of sorts. N.B.: There is no Yiddish phrase for feeling "in sorts" Then again, there is no English phrase for it either, so never mind.

alter kocker (Oll-ter KAt-ker) -
» A grumpy, cranky, cantankerous old man.
A bit more caustic than "Old fart"

IndoorDame Fun! I only know the Yiddish that has essentially made it into modern NY English. This is one of those peripheral ones that I‘ve heard often enough to recognize, and wouldn‘t exactly be confused by in context, but definitely couldn‘t have defined precisely. Love knowing what it actually means! 1y
CBee Nice! I wonder what a cantankerous lady is called? I‘m feeling like that right about now 😂🤦‍♀️🫢 1y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I have that often or I‘ll say it without realizing it and go woe …🤣👏🏼 1y
