Tonight and Always | Nora Roberts

A story of misplaced expectations from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. For a change of pace, renowned anthropologist Kasey Wyatt takes a job working for bestselling author Jordan Taylor, who needs helps researching his latest novel about the Plains Indians. Upon arriving at Jordans impressive Palm Springs estate, Kasey finds all the trappings of a family, but none of the warmth. Jordans forbidding mother is immediately suspicious of her, while Jordans shy and serious orphaned niece represses her curiosity. Jordan himself is an expert at hiding his emotions behind an aristocratic facade. Hardly the quiet and bookish woman they were all expecting, Kasey infuses their lives with light and laughter. And suddenly Jordan finds himself drawn to a woman unlike any he has ever desired, one who is able to transform his day-to-day existence into a life worth living Includes a preview of Nora Roberts novel Dark Witch Tonight and Always previously appeared in From the Heart

#BookReport - I honestly read way more than I was anticipating this week. Besides the books that are checked off, I also started reading Peter Pan (wow that one is weird) & read the tagged book as well, which wasn't on my original plan for the week, but I really needed to break up all these mysteries! Hoping to finish If I Never Met You today, but my husband is in serious “work on the big project“ mode today so there may not be much reading time.

wordslinger42 I read Peter Pan for the first time last year, and I really wasn't quite sure how I felt about it when I was done 😅 I'm reading a re-telling instead for the fairy tale challenge! 4y
ravenlee I didn‘t care for Peter Pan when I read it a year or two ago, but was glad I‘d gotten through it. It was interesting to compare the Disney movie with the original text. 4y

TheAromaofBooks @wordslinger42 @ravenlee - Somehow I've never read it before. I'm halfway through and can't say that I really like it, but there is a lot of potential here, so I could see a retelling or variation being interesting. 4y
Cinfhen Hurray for extra reading time this week... guess that seed machine is no longer kicking your butt 😘 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - It's true!! The lady who usually runs the seeding machine is sort of back (she had an emergency surgery in the family, so she's still helping with that situation a lot) so we've been working together and it's sooooo much faster & easier with her there to help me over the weird bits! 4y
Cinfhen Awesome!!! 4y

So this was definitely not one of Roberts's stronger works. It was published in 1983 and boy you can tell. The heroine is a whirlwind of intelligence & optimism, the hero a brooder who has never really realized how beautiful life can be. There are some almost-rapey scenes where the strong hero grabs her & kisses her into submission & that sort of thing. I still would have given it a soft pick, but the end of the book goes off the rails with ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the hero's evil mother threatening the heroine who then just runs away instead of talking with the dude, which honestly seemed completely out of character for someone who is known for being brutally honest to everyone. Heroine ends up pregnant but of course can't tell the hero because “it's better for him not to know“ which pisses me off faster than almost anything in a romance book. (People are constantly complaining that men don't ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) accept responsibility as fathers, yet also insist that mothers are the only ones with any rights concerning a baby & its future unless the mother graciously condescends to even let the father know of the baby's existence... and wow does it make me MAD) sooooo um got distracted there, point is, the last chunk of this book really dragged out for no actual reason & seriously annoyed me, because the spunky heroine suddenly turned into ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) this secretive person hiding away from all her problems, so literally a 180 from how she had been for the rest of the book. Generally I really enjoy Roberts's writing, but some of her early 80s stuff is genuinely pretty bad & this is definitely one of them.

HOWEVER although most of the action takes place in California, that last annoying chunk is in West Virginia so I was excited to check it off of my #SeparatedbyaPondTour challenge!!

kimmypete1 I love NR, but I‘ve yet to find any of her 80‘s/early 90‘s books to be great. Product of the times, as that was the MO for all romances back then. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @kimmypete1 - Exactly. Some of her books I really love (the Bridal Quartet is one of my go-to comfort reads) but as I've picked up odd books from her backlog they really are VERY 80s haha 4y
kimmypete1 @TheAromaofBooks The Bridal Quartet is also my fave!❤️ 4y

Yay!! #MarvellousMarch time!! Also, I definitely had to check to see if marvelous is spelled differently in the UK - and it IS! 😂 Y'all are crazy.

For this readathon, I'm going to try to read 2000 pages. I've really been enjoying page goals for this readathon each month, mainly because it involves me creating a little graph in my journal & then coloring in the squares & who doesn't want to do that??

Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 !!!

Deblovestoread Good catch on the two ll‘s. I need to go edit my post. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
ShananigansReads I had the same issue when looking up the thon tag yesterday to get the graphic. Could not find it at all cause I was spelling it differently. I was so confused. 🤣😂🤣 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Kdgordon88 @Bookjunkie57 - We'll have to petition for future months to only use adjectives that all English-speaking countries spell the same 😂 4y

Ruthiella Good catch on the spelling! 😀 4y
Andrew65 Hadn‘t realised that about the spelling! 🙈🤷‍♂️ Agree @thearomaofbooks Should have been #MagnificientMarch! 4y
Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck. 😊👍 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - I had no idea, either, until I started to type the hashtag!! It frequently seems to be the most random words that are different between our countries. 4y
Librariana @TheAromaofBooks - That's why I spelled it 'marvelous' on my graphic, but kept the hashtag as 'marvellous' since that's how @Andrew65 shared it with us. I had a feeling it had to do with where Mr. Andrew is joining us from 😉😁😊 I'm also a big fan of the 'ou' in words like 'colour' and 'favourite'. Being a non-native English speaker, it was fun (and slightly confusing!) to learn the differences. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Librariana - Yes, there are a lot of random differences between the US & everyone else. I can't imagine trying to learn them when English isn't your first language!! I have such a huge admiration of people who can understand multiple languages. I came across a Spanish paper I wrote in high school in Spanish, & I can't even translate it, so I've lost what little I knew! 4y
Andrew65 @Librariana Yes English spelling, not aware this was spelt differently in the US. 4y

I went to a book sale this morning! This is a stack of books I‘ve already read and loved (except for 2.) The tagged book was on the local authors signed copy shelf. They are now waiting patiently for their turn to visit a Little Free Library.

Gotta love these 80s novels that throw in a rape scene for good measure! Other than that... I really enjoyed this one up until that point.
