Crusoe's Daughter
Crusoe's Daughter | Jane Gardam
6 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
In 1904, when she was six, Polly Flint went to live with her two holy aunts at the yellow house by the marsh - so close to the sea that it seemed to toss like a ship, so isolated that she might have been marooned on an island. And there she stayed for eighty-one years, while the century raged around her, while lamplight and Victorian order became chaos and nuclear dred. Crusoe's Daughter, ambitious, moving and wholly original, is her story.

Europa Editions publishes many of Jane Gardam's books, and they have sales pretty often. My favorite of hers is currently on sale. Polly Flint's sea-faring father leaves her with her maternal aunts for a voyage and is lost at sea. Raised in a decidedly odd household by aunts who are stuck in the Victorian age, Gardam steers her though the World Wars and the many changes they wrought on society. Adrift, Polly takes Crusoe as her guiding light.

LeahBergen I‘ve read a couple by this author but not this one. It sounds great! I have A Long Way from Verona waiting on my shelves. 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I looooove A Long Way From Verona. That's my second favorite of hers. Backlisted did a great podcast on it, too. 2y
Ruthiella I loved this book. I also loved 2y

Aimeesue @Ruthiella Have you read her short stories? "The Sidmouth Letters" is my favorite short story of all time. #Pemberlittens should definitely read it! 2y
jlhammar This was a good one! Definitely need to read more Gardam. I have God on the Rocks and Faith Fox on my shelves just waiting. Backlisted is such a great podcast. @LeahBergen Now I want to get A Long Way from Verona! 2y
Ruthiella I haven‘t read her short stories. Thanks for the tip! 2y
Aimeesue @jlhammar I adore Gardam. I wish she were still writing, but at 94, I suppose she's having a well deserved restful retirement. I led a book discush a few months ago on C's Daughter - I'm definitely a JG evangelist. 😂 I can't understand why she's not more well known. I think she's brilliant. 2y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue Oh, good to know. I‘ll give it a listen after I read the book. And now I must hunt down her short stories, I see! 😄 2y

A heads-up for those who are looking for translated works - Europa Editions has been putting a lot of its e-books on sale (US stores) the past week or so. They're rotating the sale books every few days, so if you're looking for translated books - or Gardam, who writes in English - find them by using the Advanced Search tool, then sorting by Price: low to high.

*Sigh*
This is, bar none, the best book I‘ve read this year. Jane Gardam is just incredible. ❤️❤️❤️

LeahBergen I‘ve only read one of her books. Now which one was it? 🤔 5y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen I have that one on my shelf, but haven't gotten to it yet. I'd read the Old Filth trilogy years ago and liked them, but didn't get much further until I started listening to the Backlisted podcast. They did an episode on Gardam and Then I just had to read her. They did A Long Way From Verona, which I saving until Nov. Verona and Crusoe are very, very bookish. Perfect, in other words. (edited) 5y
Aimeesue I also highly recommend her short stories. A must read is "The Sandhill Letters." 5y

Mehso-so

This book has good reviews and has a good literary feel to it, but I'm afraid it just wasn't for me. There just seemed a lack of detail and of connection to historical events to keep me fully engaged in the story. There were points in the story where it started to engage me, like when she first taught a class, but these weren't developed and subsequently I lost interest. It is a good book but just didn't do it for me.
