Peppermints in the Parlor | Barbara Brooks Wallace
5 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Emily Luccock is looking forward to living at Sugar Hill Hall....She remembers her aunt and uncle's grand old mansion well, with its enormous, elegant parlor, marble fireplace, and white china cups filled with hot chocolate. But this time things are different. Her aunt's once bright and lively home is now dead with silence. Evil lurks in every corner, and the dark, shadowed walls watch and whisper late at night. And no one ever speaks. Everything's changed at Sugar Hill Hall, and Emily knows something awful is happening there. What's become of Uncle Twice? Why is Aunt Twice a prisoner in her own home? Emily is desperate to uncover the truth. Time is running out, and she must find a way to save the people and home she cares so much about.

I think this gothic mystery may have sparked my love for dark and unsettling reads. This is actually the back cover of the edition I would have read back in elementary school (age 8 or 9), but this is the image that really stuck with me. Those poor residents, forced to live on watery gruel, will be sent to the Remembrance Room if they dare steal a peppermint.

I love this book! I wish I could read it over and over again with selective amnesia. It‘s not really a Christmas book, but I‘ve reread it every year around that time. If you haven‘t read it it‘s a very fun children‘s fiction book.

Pickpick

It's not easy to remember books read *in* school, but these came back to me. I LOVED this one by Barbara Wallace, probably the first Gothic style mystery I ever touched. Old people and mean caretakers and young waifs! So Edward Gorey but less grim. :)
