The Beach at Night
The Beach at Night | Elena Ferrante
Inspired by one of Elena Ferrantes earlier novels, The Lost Daughter, this is a bewitching fable for girls and boys, but also for Elena Ferrante fans of all ages. Accompanied by full-colour illustrations by Mara Cerri, The Beach At Night is a beautiful picture book narrated by a doll named Celina. Mati is a little girl so taken by her new kitten that she forgets about her doll and leaves her on the beach. Celina endures a terrifying night, only saved by the arrival of sunrise, when her beloved Mati returns to find her. Elena Ferrante was born in Naples. She is the author of seven novels: The Days of Abandonment, Troubling Love, The Lost Daughter, the quartet of Neapolitan novels: My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child, as well as Frantumaglia, a selection of interviews, letters and occasional writings. She is one of Italy's most acclaimed authors. Ann Goldstein has translated all of Elena Ferrantes work. She is an editor at the New Yorker and a recipient of the PEN Renato Poggioli Translation Prize.

A short tale about a doll left a whole night at the beach.
Loved the atmosphere, sometimes tensed, with a touch of angst.
I also liked the ending that shades new light onto the story.
It's a book that I'm sure would be interesting to read with kids, especially to open a discussion about feeling afraid, fear of being left alone, etc. Definitely going to put it on my list of books for my nieces.

#ReadingResolutions Day 13: Few people seem to know that Ferrante wrote a children‘s book set in the #Beach. Everything in this story is reified, from the burning flames to the crashing waves to the doll‘s consciousness with the words that she clutches jealously and protectively to the center of her body so that the Mean Beach Attendant would not be able to access and steal them from her. Surreal, weird, beautiful. Link to Full review below ⬇️

As a #ferrantefangirl I had to pick up this short illustrated story when I saw it on Book Outlet for cheap! 🤑Nothing life-changing but if you're a fan, you'll probably want to read it 📚😊

Cinfhen Cover is super #creep (y) 7y
Lacythebookworm @Cinfhen Oh yes! It definitely qualifies as a #creep (y) read! 7y

The detritus of my #LitsyPartyofOne. I fell asleep on the floor while reading "The Beach at Night," a weird little story I was really enjoying until I dropped the book on my chest and zonked out. ?

Dragon Looks like a very comfy spot for your party 😀 8y
pocketmermaid @Dragon I started out on the couch, but it got taken over by the cat. That's usually how it goes. 8y
Dragon Of course 🐱 8y

This brief, mysterious story is about a girl's doll who gets left on the beach. It's illustrated and written simply, but I wouldn't classify it as a children's book. It's surreal and quirky, erring occasionally on the side of creepy.

Bibliogeekery Would it be okay for a seven year old? I was wondering about it as a gift but haven't read it yet 8y
saresmoore @Bibliogeekery The word "shit" appears once, but I'm just not sure a 7yo would get it. I have a sharp just-turned-8yo and I decided to wait to share it with her. 8y

Naturally I went to the library the day after a readathon. I even tortured my children by making them wait patiently and quietly (yeah, right!) while I browsed the new books section. Any recommendations of what's good here?

MicheleinPhilly We're All Damaged is light and funny if you're looking for a palate cleanser. Also loved Issa Rae and Sarah Waters is my goddess. 8y
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly Well, now I want to read all three of those at once! But I'm definitely feeling in the mood for a goddess. Thank you! 8y
Ericmanciniwriter I'm interested in Ferrante. I've heard so many good things, and I'm trying learn Italian, yet her book covers are practically designed to keep me away. Let us know how it is 8y
saresmoore @Eamann I haven't read anything by Ferrante yet, either. This one is a short, simple, illustrated story, but probably not a children's book. I don't like her usual cover art, either. (This one is different, but kinda creepy.) 8y

Don't let the small size deceive you; this is not an ordinary kid's picture book. Without giving anything away, I believe she's making a statement about violence against women, specifically when men make women say things the women don't want to say. Heavy stuff for a picture book. If you have read it and have a better idea about what it means, let's chat about it.

8little_paws Oh man, Elena Ferrante. I read the Neapolitan novels and a few others by her and then I just couldn't do it any more. She's heavy 8y
autumnprivett @8little_paws I haven't finished the Neapolitan Series , but she definitely doesn't waste words. 8y
Lola That cover!! Also with a creepy cover, a little girl, a doll and a beach are part of 8y
autumnprivett @Lola Oooo, that makes sense. I've not read THE LOST DAUGHTER yet, so maybe I will revisit this once I've read it. I wonder if it would change my perspective. 8y
Gina Free fall is one of my all time favorite childerns books. It was my first book purchase as an adult (18). I was a library fiend up till then (still am) 8y
