Silence of the Grave
Silence of the Grave: An Inspector Erlendur Novel | Arnaldur Indridason
9 posts | 14 read | 18 to read
Winner of the CWA Gold Dagger AwardInspector Erlendur returns in this gripping Icelandic thriller When a skeleton is discovered half-buried in a construction site outside of Reykjavk, Inspector Erlendur finds himself knee-deep in both a crime scene and an archeological dig. Bone by bone, the body is unearthed, and the brutalizing history of a family who lived near the building site comes to light along with it. Was the skeleton a man or a woman, a victim or a killer, and is this a simple case of murder or a long-concealed act of justice? As Erlendur tries to crack this cold case, he must also save his drug-addicted daughter from self destruction and somehow glue his hopelessly fractured family back together.Like the chilly Nordic mysteries of Henning Mankell and Karen Fossum, Arnaldur Indridason delivers a stark police procedural full of humanity and pathos, a classic noir from a very cold place.

This is a good Icelandic thriller from Arnaldur Indriðason and I love that we‘re given more information about Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson‘s back story. In this novel, a skeleton is discovered, and tracing its identity reveals a story of terrible domestic abuse, and ultimately how it taints and destroys the victims. In a parallel arc, Erlender‘s daughter is hovering near death due to a late stage miscarriage resulting from her drug abuse.

I am really enjoying how this series describes the Icelandic culture and history. The mystery meshes well with that added bonus. This may be my favorite #NordicNoir series. And, the dry humor of Oli is a plus. @Tove_Reads @AnneCecilie @Andrew65 @EadieB

This is the fourth book in the Detective Erlendur series. They take place in Iceland. They are hauntingly good. The murder case is revealed at the very opening of the book and with unexpected situations the outcome was hidden till the very end. They have a similar feel to the Wallander series.
The last paragraph left me gasping, with an urge to just hug the book and immediately start the next.
Trigger warning for domestic violence.

Settling down with a good book, and a new mug and bookmark from the local craft fair. If you haven't yet read Arnaldur Indridason, police mysteries set in Reykjavik check them out. They are really good, similar in feel to the Wallander series but in Iceland. You will find them shelved in the 'A's

Second novel in his Reykjavik mysteries. As amazing as the first one. A dark tale of abuse, of courage and ultimately of resilience. Erlendur must deal with his daughter in a profound coma, the discovery of a skeleton in the suburbs of Reykjavik where the second World War Army base was situated starts a trip down memory lane and the search for a woman in green, a lost fiancée and in the end the naked truth. Deep, disturbing but wonderful. ⭐️⭐️?

Eyglo Happy you liked it! (I'm from Reykjavík 😊). I also recommend checking out Yrsa Sigurdardottir, another fantastic Icelandic thriller writer 🌟 8y

It's 100 degrees outside, so of course I'm reading a book set in Iceland. It also has this click-bait of the first sentence: "He knew at once it was a human bone, when he took it from the baby who was sitting on the floor chewing it".

Sadly my Icelandic is not yet good enough to do the original.

BookishMarginalia 👍🏼That's one captivating opening sentence! 8y
Angelala007 Oooh! Must read! 8y
