The Infernal World of Branwell Bront
The Infernal World of Branwell Bront | Daphne Du Maurier
6 posts | 5 read | 20 to read
"Miss du Maurier has brought to the art of the biography the narrative urgency which gives such animation to her storytelling." -New York Times Book Review Pursued by the twin demons of drink and madness, Branwell Bronte created a private world that was indeed infernal. As a bold and gifted child, his promise seemed boundless to the three adoring sisters over whom his rule was complete. But as an adult, the precocious flame of genius distorted and burned low. With neither the strength nor the resources to counter rejection, unable to sell his paintings or publish his books, Branwell became a spectre in the Bronte story, in pathetic contrast with the astonishing achievements of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. This is the biography of the shadowy figure of the "unknown" Bronte.

Pickpick

Patrick Branwell Bronte has always been the least well known, yet in his early life he showed equal promise, being the main inspiration or “Genius Brannii“ of their early literary exploits.

I'm not convinced the evidence is strong enough that Branwell could claim even part credit for Wuthering Heights, but I did find Du Maurier's hypothesis about the rumoured love affair with the wife of his employer, being a cover story made sense. 3.5 🌟

I read for the same reason that I ate or drank because it was a real craving of nature

@batsy and @saresmoore are currently reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and the Litsy conversations have reminded me of this oldie that I bought a few weeks ago. Branwell Bronte started out as the "genius" of the Bronte siblings but his alcoholism and opium addiction led to his early death at age 31.
